Way out West.
Got a buddy that has a 30+ yo Mini 14 that functions fine, but sucks in the accuracy department. I see there's a company in CO that specializes in just that, Accuracy Systems but he doesn't want to ship his rifle to CO from CA. I see you can get a good quality barrel incuding a Krieger, but surely there has to be other issues that need to be addressed.

Over gassed, could use bolt buffers and a little weight on the muzzle and a replacement front sight.

Yeah good call. I've never owned one just shot a couple and they were fun, but GD did they throw the brass.

I'm assuming irons with an aperture rear.

Just a better (i.e., not an 1/8" wide) front sight will make a difference. I've got an H&K style front sight on mine but that outfit (Eagle, IIRC) went out of business decades ago.

I got a mo-reaper for mine, but it is aluminum. The pre 580s benefit from some weight on the end of its barrel.

I know fuckall about these guns, but he said it has the flipup rear sight, so don't know if that dates it or not. I do know he's had it for over 30 years, probably more like 35, bought it brand new.

What's he shooting? Aren't those early 14s like a 9 or 10 twist? Might not work as well with some of the heavier boolits.

You can get away with 69 and 73gr with a 1:9. Bet a 75gr bthp would still work too

Probably XM193 of some flavor. I've got enough variety from 50g to 77 that we could probably find something that works better, but without a barrel change, it ain't gonna be sub-moa. I know it wasn't designed for that, but it sounds like a fun project.

That is a pre 581 (first three of the serial) it has the skinny (er) barrel. If he wants to shoot irons I would replace the rear sight with one from tech sights and machine the front sight thinner.

It is never going to be sub moa.
Accuracy Systems says sub with the heavy barrels. It was the first gun he purchased, so is attached to it sentimentally, plus he's in CA and it's legal, so why not see what can be done with it.. I spoke to a couple local smiths that didn't want to take it on and both suggested AS after I explained what they do...ie; take it to the experts.

He's tried 45g, 55g, 62g, 69g, 75g and 77g and they all shoot like ass. I assume it's a 1:9 barrel, but if he goes with AS, he'll go 1:7 or 1:8. My Les Baer 24" bull is 1:8 and it loves the heavies.

I wasn't thinking that he was going to change the barrel, I thought that he didn't want to send it off.
I convinced him it was the right way to go. Said call them, tell them what you have and what you want and they'll come back with a recommendation. I assume barrel, trigger, gas bushing and bumper at a minimum.

And thx for the info.

Just to toss a monkey wrench into this: Is that a picture of his Mini-14? If so, it has a very rare government barrel (Mini-14GB, Government Bayonet).

What picture are you looking at? Because I don't see any mini 14 gb posted so far .

You're right, small phone, only saw the front sight placement, not the missing lug. All he would need is the GB front sight WITH the lug (providing there is a FH). Still uncommon.

i love mini-14
I had a love hate relationship with mine years ago. I bought it new in the early 90’s and loved the Garand style bolt action on it. But like above, after the first round shot it would dance all over the place. I never did any mods to it other than the crappy aftermarket folding stock. Aftermarket high capacity mags for it absolutely sucked ass as well. I wound up selling it off around ten years ago or so.

I’m not at all a Ruger fan buuuuuut, they did come back out with their SS folding stock model with two Ruger 20 round mags. I was really close to buying one but decided against it for now. Mainly due to remembering how inaccurate my old one was. I hope they made improvements on it.

I bought a Ruger P89 semi auto 9mm pistol back in the early 90’s and it too was one of the most inaccurate hand guns I’ve ever owned. People said for me to send to back to Ruger to have them accuracies it. I said nope, it should shot consistent new when it was sold. I traded it in on a Beretta 92SF and that thing is very accurate right out of the box.

Don't think I could hit a cows ass standing in a field. Worst riffle I've ever shot. Though about getting a new barrel but it's original military and sentimental so gets shoved all the way to the back of the safe.
Fucking brass comes out that thing almost as fast as the bullet

My 181 series was terrible. The factory said they couldn’t re-barrel it, so not to bother sending it to them. I said goodbye and sold it.

Sent my Mini 30 & 14 triggers to Accuracy Systems. Just doing that made a big difference in how they shoot.
I wouldn't be worried about sending it to CO ,they are out in BFE eastern slope.
A friend's father in law has a 14 tricked out by them and he swears it's a tack driver. I just can't justify the price tag when I can build an AR for half the price that shots just as well. But being in Cali it might change things.
