Since we didnt have enough threads on vises already

I've been drooling over the orange bench vise for gunsmithing and more delicate operations - Orange Bench Vise
But $1500 is insane.

This doesnt look that hard to build. They even have a video of how they make/assemble most of it. Looks like other than the piston and screw it's all aluminum. Those have the fancy TiN coating, but it would be easy to plate it another way.

I see the AL costing a decent bit if you were to buy the chunks at online retail prices, but considering trying to see what I can find over time for scrap.

Thots?

If it is what you really really want, go for it. Just be sure to post pics along the way.
It will be a while of gathering aluminum chunks. Need to see what I have first

Interesting to see on the video - they helicoil all the threads from the start

That just seems to be a very niche use when it is constructed from Aluminum. 3000 lb max force, plenty enough for gunsmithing but maybe not enough for holding fixtures for gunsmithing.

The fireball vise design built with precision seems to be much more worth the effort.

It looks pretty and I'm in to watch you build one, even if I don't get what it's for vs soft jaws in a standard vice.

Its slightly niche and orange is betting on their rep in the CNC community to sell them at that price. Area 419 dresses one up for the long range shooting crowd also Orange Bench Vise Maintenance and Barrel Change Package – Area 419

My advantages - swivel to the side with a still good lock, dovetail jaws and the ability to take it with the pull stud and place it on the mill table. I have a beefier normal vise on the welding table for beating on stuff

And they give you plans that cover many of the details - https://www.orangevise.com/content/BENCHVISE_DIMENSIONS.PDF

I've got a random piece of 2"x2" aluminum bar in the shop that I can section into lengths short enough to put in a flat rate box.

I think there's 4' of it or so.

Might take you up on that. Ordered one of these for the main body - Aluminum Plate 5-3/4" 5.75" x 6" x 7.25" 2024-T351 Aluminum Flat Metal Stock | eBay

I was going to start drawing it out in fusion so I can figure out "Ideal" materials and what range will work.

Probably going with an off the shelf acme threaded rod and nut. I'll bore and pin the rod. While I can turn acme stuff it will cost me more in inserts and headaches than a properly made one

If you're looking at $1500 vices, maybe consider the Fireball vice. In their comparison video it put out like 90k lbf clamping before it failed, and obliterated the other big name vices worth 2-3x as much.
