05 superduty with Jana76 kit and 5.38 gears. Finally got back on this project and roughed out a pattern with setup bearings. Coast is centered, drive side is toe heavy. I don't think i can get it much better than this. Can anyone fill me in on a competition pattern?

Pinion needs to move away from the carrier some. Start with .010 or .015 more shim under the pinion support and try again.

So people keep calling me and emailing me pics of their ring and pinion patterns and want to know which way to shim in order for the best pattern. Most are confused, looking at patterns in a manual and trying to figure out which way to move the gears. I'll have to admit it was very confusing to...
And I'm sure Carl would be happy to offer his opinion.

Yes i found that one. I called Carl yesterday to talk to him about setting up the pinion preload. Looks like I need about 600 thou of shim to clamp everything solid. His kit was short by quite a bit. It's strange to need that much, it might be the gears. Anyways. I have the slinger and 15 thou in and its just toe happy. He said the pattern will only creep to the heal with load so my pattern is fine. I've tried everything from no shim to 30+ thou and 15 was the sweet spot.I hate to give them clicks, but this is worth a read.

So to close this thread out, I needed 428 thou of shim to get 25 in/lbs of pinion preload. Carl sent me the proper hardened spacer that registers with the outer bearing without interfering with the cage. I have about 7 thou of backlash and 20 thou of carrier preload. Finally can check this one off as done.
