What's new

Another CA vacation, this time it's Sequoia Natl Park and Yosemite

Can't answer your questions directly but will make this suggestion.

Dont go unarmed.

Yeah well ya gotta do what you feel is right for yourself and your family.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6!

Going into a desolate area is a good reason for carrying, as bad people rely that people like yall wont look after theirselves and be prepared.

Just my opinion it's worth every dollar ya paid for it.

Government tends to release criminals and have no consern of law abiding taxpayers.

That's a problem. CA doesn't honor my TN CC License
Does California’s castle doctrine apply to visitors too?

I can defend myself in my home, in my travel trailer, in a tent, in my hotel room.
*a “temporary” residence counts too.

I like just hiking to the general Sherman and Sequoia. If you have a wheelchair with you, some of the “accessible hikes“ are a bitch. Otherwise they are nice 15 to 20 minute hikes.

Check to see what the road conditions are like on the Kings side, a bunch of ot washed out last year, but most people just do the Sequoia side anyway.

Tokopah Falls trail is quick and easy, even if there is a bit of early snow.

Moro rock is a must do as well as the Giant Forest.

If you are up for a bit more of a hike.

Marble Falls Trail

And the trail above Tokopah Falls, I'll have to look up the name. EDIT 2: The Watchtower Trail. Looks down like 1500' to the bottom of Tokopah falls, do Tokopah first. It's easy and will help you get used to the elevation.

Yosemite.

Get out of the valley. Hike out to Ranchareia (sp)Falls. Go to Toulomne Meadows.

Then do all the normal yosemite stuff. All the Falls, Mirror Lake, Mariposa Grove if you want to see more Sequoias.

EDIT: Forgot the drive through Kings Canyon if the road is open.

Also, I'll add more as I remeber.

Sequoia / Kings Canyon is the best. About 16 years ago I went there and told a ranger that I wanted to camp away from all these people and he told me to drive through the park onto BLM land and keep going on a 2-track on the ridge of a mountain for about 20 miles or so. I saw a mamma and 2 baby bears crossing the road on the way in. Spent 2 weeks on the mountain with my dog, just having the best time doing nothing at all. Its great, you will love it!

WTF for?

I have never felt threatened in the area.

was in Yosemite the year the bears were breaking into car more than metheads do in Oakland.
big deal, cool to see wildlife that is always more afraid than you are.

yes, lots of tourists but being armed is not an issue.

Get some bomb ice cream from Reimers in Three rivers, then do the same in Oakhurst.

You will probably be just past peak color in Yosemite Valley.

Half Dome is a really cool hike but you have to have a permit to go up the cable route. Did it about a decade ago with my dad. For the length and elevation gain it's a lot easier than it looks on paper. Similar length and elevation change as Long's Peak but Long's is way more of an ass kicker.

If you are comfortable with being unarmed in such an area have at it.

Where are you staying? I can make some recommendations if you do not already have a place.

In his defense, when we were in Sequoia last summer, we left our hotel and drove past a burnt-out car. I commented how it was probably stolen to the wife. We were going to drive down to the Giant Forest, and the Rangers and PD had it all shut down and were turning people around just past Lodgepole. We drove back out a bit and hiked down in until we got kicked out by some other rangers who said there was an armed and dangerous person hiding in the giant forest somewhere. I made some snide comment, and they were not happy with me, and my wife made me turn around. Asshole probably would have arrested me for hiking in public land.:shaking:

Yosemite
4 mile trail from Glacier point to the valley. It’s all steep downhill. Make sure your boots and toes are ready for the constant downhill. Grab a shuttle from the Valley to Glacier Point then hike to the Valley. Give yourself time to visit Glacier Point views before starting the trek down.

During Covid the Park found that they could limit visitors and make a $ by requiring an entry permit. Covid is gone but the permit remains during high use times. It may or may not be in effect when you go. If in effect you buy the permit online prior to arrival and not on the day of arrival. Currently, no permit is required if you enter before 5:00 am or after 4:00 pm.

Not a bad idea if you do any kind of back country hiking out there. In yosemite, The bears are very used to people and have no problem getting wayyy to close to comfort. But if you stay in the valley and do short hikes around the waterfalls you would be fine with bear spray.

Then be mindful of it being a national park, so all buildings are FEDERAL buildings and all firearms are prohibited in any federal building. So you have to plan ahead where it will be stored. If in a car, CA law states "unloaded in a locked container" and no the trunk or glovebox does not count.

DO NOT leave a single food item in your vehicle. Cars are ripped to shreds almost daily in curry village.

My mom grew up in a small town near Yosemite and went thereba lot as a kid in the 60s/70s. They used to do some cool stuff back then, they stopped this decades ago.

They would do 'firefalls' - they would start a huge bonfire on top of a cliff and after sunset they would shove all the ashes over the cliff. Now people think its a photography thing with the sunlight hitting the waterfall or some shit.

They used to have a 'bear show' at Yosemite. It was literally just bleachers at the dump (yes, yosemite has a dump). There was an announcer and everything. The announcer would get on the horn and say 'you want to see some bears!?!?!' and the garbage truck would dump a load out and these goddamn bears would pounce on that shit and start fighting over trash bags full of food.

Goddamn hippies ruin everything

Yosemite west is close to Glacier Pt, so you should definitely take a trip up there.

I've never stayed at the river inn, but I'm guessing it's right on the Kaweah River. Should have gotten some rain by then so the sound is amazing.

Also stop at the Gateway lodge on your way into or out of the park and have a drink on the balcony, or reserve a seat for dinner after dark. They light up all the giant granite boulders in the river. Pretty cool.

Also Hospital Hock, and hike down to the river in Sequoia. Really short walk.

Pick from the Gateway and the falls below Hospital Rock, taken exactly a year ago today. Probably not as much water when you wil be there, but just as beautiful

Just spent a couple of days in Yellowstone including lots of building, and stopped at the Colter Bay visitor center when going through Grand Tetons and Dinosaur National Monument on the way home. My motto was 'two out of three ain't bad" :flipoff2:

We drove through Yosemite on our drive to and from Mammoth last week. Firstly I will say that Yosemite is beautiful and everyone needs to see it at least once. Secondly I will say that I hate the fawking crowds there. It's generally a ton of people who don't do outdoors type things out trying to do outdoors type things because Yosemite is famous enough that they think they need to.

This time around we stopped at Teneya Lake to eat lunch and got a cool little spot that avoided all the crowds. That was pretty good. It gets windy there in the afternoon, but this little cove was secluded from the wind and shallow enough for the sun to warm the water up there.

Tenaya lake is beautiful. I’m gonna take the wife up to paddleboard it this fall.
