So I am in the process of building a new buggy. Collecting parts and planning. I am going to run a 3.9LZ9/904/ecobox/D300. My debate is #1- u joint size for the axle and case, and #2- gearing for axles. Axles will be '05+ d60/sterling 10.5, likely 40's

My current ride is a heavy truggy with vortec5.7/sm465/205/205 and 5.13's on 40's...Does well. Others in my group have v8/auto/doubler/5.13/40's

I'm curious if I should run just as deep? 5.13 or 5.38....or like 4.88?

Wheeling is east coast crawling, wet/slop, bounce if needed.

I ran east coast 39" Reds for years with V8, auto, 3.8 tcase & 4.88 difs. Switched to 5.38 and liked it a LOT more. My buggy is 5.13 but with 42's so I can't comment. (you saw it on Balderdash)

How heavy is heavy?
I'm with bebop on gears...

My current truggy is right at 6k with fuel, spares, etc.

The new one I am hoping to be 3k or less.

white-rhino sounds like people never regret the gearing....and If i find some 42" reds.. that might get the nod

If I had more power, I'd go with 4.88s instead of the 5.13 in my current vehicle.
Wheel speed is good too.
I was concerned about wheel speed but it became a non issue. My hill killer gear was 2nd gear, low range. When I went to deeper gears, it became 3rd gear.
My bigger problem was that with a tourqy v8, I would get too much burp when trying to crawl. Going deeper gears slowed that down.

I like 1410s for rear driveshafts. Supports lots of driveline angle and abuse and there's generally plenty of room for them out back. 1350 fronts seem to be fine and helps for tighter clearances in a front engine buggy.

I've never done V6 and doubler life, so don't have much experience there. I like my V8, 3:1 low range, and 5.38 gears.

JohnnyJ I have 1410 on my current stuff. My guess is that would all make the d300 the weak link?

i dont think the 1410 ujoint would make that your weak link if i recal 1350 and 1410 are same size of caps the 1410 it a little bigger across to allow more angle.

1410 is substantially stronger! Moving caps farther out is like putting a cheater pipe on your breaker bar to make same torque with less force.
