anyone using an app for doing dashcam things they like?
I just ordered a whole grom setup for the wife's volvo. i'd like to hook up the front and rear cameras and use them as dashcams.
The vline is a standalone android box that integrates with the car. Can run regular android apps.

  • 2GB RAM, 16GB flash, Android 8.1
    GPS, Wifi and Bluetooth enabled
    Adds CarPlay and Android Auto
Voice assistant for navigation and music
Music plugins: Spotify, Web Radio, Google Music, Pandora
Navigation: Google Maps, Waze, Sygic, others
    Install any Android compatible apps
AV for backup and front facing camera
Android Auto USB / wireless (phone calls via factory bluetooth)
CarPlay via USB and wireless, phone calls supported

basically a headless cell phone that uses the factory screen with a touchscreen overlay.
I asked grom tech support and got "maybe"

here I am still trying to get my toaster to connect to the wifi so I can see how much longer I have to wait each time and you are doing this stuff.

Good for you but that sounds like the most frustrating thing I could ever imagine doing.

naw, it's cake.

the install is all documented.
it just hooks inline with the factory setup to sniff the can bus, then hijacks the video signal to the head unit. You hold the sensus button down and it cuts off the factory display signal and switches to it's own.
this is the alternative to paying volvo to upgrade the 2g modem in the car to 4g and then still having terrible infotainment software.
edit: it's a grand to upgrade the modem, this is cheaper with more functionality. You don't get the luxury of paying them $20 a month to remote start your car from the phone, but I already hacked the car to enable remote start from the keyfob.....

taking apart the dash should be the hardest part of the install. Well that and installing the touchscreen overlay with no bubbles or dust specs. Imma freak out if I see a dust spec trapped in there every time I get in the car, so I'll probably pull it, take it inside and do the install inside a brand new turkey bag.

I started playing with crankshaft on a raspberry pi trying to get to a "vaguely similar to android auto" place but it wouldn't work at all on a pi zero, I loaded it on a pi 4 and got distracted before getting farther than imaging it. The two cars I most want android auto in, already have it via aftermarket stereos, so it's more of a "what can I make" play project than something I feel a strong need to do. I'd like eventually to get it to a point that it can Bluetooth to my phone for music/nav/calls, output music to a conventional-ish amp, run tuner studio in the fore/background, and digest a couple camera feeds (forward/reverse) as both backup and dash cam, but other things are much higher priority.

the vline box delivers android and android auto for me.

I just need some software that doesn't suck and will run in the backround from startup for two camera feeds.
