Folks cheer as sweet home Alabama grocery store installs the most American vending machine ever!

Some Alabama shoppers will get to try out automatic vending machines that dispense something other than groceries.
Stores in Tuscaloosa and Pell City are now sporting vending machines by American Rounds that dispense ammunition, verifying a buyer’s identification using artificial intelligence technology.
“The buyer inserts their photo ID, and the machine conducts a 360-degree scan to match it to the ID card,” according to AL.com.

“The machines can currently be found at Fresh Value locations in Tuscaloosa, at 4200 McFarland Blvd., and Pell City, 1009 Martin St. The company plans to expand to other locations in Alabama as well, according to CEO Grant Magers,” the outlet added.
“One of the ways we’re changing the landscape of ammunition sales is to make it more available,” a rep for American Rounds said in a promo video,

“Anything we can do to help them make their shopping trips easier, based on the feedback we’ve gotten from customers today, they are so excited about us having this ammo kiosk,” Terry Stanley, COO of Fresh Value, said in the video.
Tuscaloosa Police Chief Brent Blankley told The Tuscaloosa Thread that the machines are legal and approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

So it takes a 360 degree scan of your face to match it to your ID card? Of course the ATF approved it, that's their wet dream to have a biometric scan on file to match with ammo purchases that likely indicate what guns you have.

Fuck that noise. I'm not consenting to any data gathering to buy ammo.

If you think they already don't have enough info to your buying habets, or anything else, you sir are sadley mistaken

Oh so you should accept full surveillance because they've already violated your privacy to a large enough extent? Where's the convenience/rights violation line for you? Would you send in a DNA sample with your taxes if that would mean they auto file for you?

To me a 3d face scan paired with an ID is not a fair compromise for the convenience of buying ammo out of a box. Especially since that data is most likely headed right back to a database, not just used for a one time comparison in the vending machine.

Having nothing to hide and handing over all your data just means you've made it easy for the day that the rules change and they decide to do a retroactive sweep of all the people that broke the new rule in the past. We are barreling into the world of 1984 and that attitude gets you China's social credit score system. The only thing slowing the implementation of that here are privacy rights.

That was my first thought, sounds more like China than America.

I’m sure the information is out there, but the government being organized/efficient enough to make any use of it is another story.

How many times have you dealt with “oh, that form you requested was never actually sent/received?”

I can easily see the case where this decides to add you to a watch list or shuts down your ability to buy ammo if you exceed their made up limits.

Nobody remembers buying .22 ammo from this?

This is the :usa: way-

Why does it even need to take a 3d scan if it's comparing to a 2d picture on your license? It would only need to do that if it was collecting info or comparing the scan to an existing database.
Bingo. They are using facial recognition software to tie it all together. Your drivers license photo or state issued ID is used for that as well.

All these people are like oh its so cool, fuck anti gun. The gov/corps are getting as much or even more info/data from that machine than if they walked in a store and just bought the shit. The ways people are fooled into thinking they are "winning" is almost laughable.

What aggravates me is the attention grabbing headline about buying ammo out of a vending machine - going to inflame the anti-gunners and anyone who just reads the headlines and thinks OMG, anyone, including a child, could just walk up and buy ammo - and parrots that to the next idiot they talk to. But when you read the article it takes essentially the same, if not more, "supervision" to be able to buy it as compared to a local brick and mortar store.

They used to sell cigarettes out of vending machines too, and electronic scanning didn't exist back then.

Theres plenty of places in town to buy your generic stuff. Hell even the Grange co-op sells ammo. Its just fairly spendy most of the time, compared to online.

thats a thing?
Not in Mountainair where I live, used tobe able to buy .22 at the hardware store but not anymore.

FWIW it's Alabama, so that scanner is running off of a Windows 95 pentium II with a Tandy tube screen. And the internet is AOL cd and everything is hooked to a tall deck 427 generator running on propane. So if the fbi wants to link up to it, its gonna take a while.

I guess that would work in a pinch.

In today's market you can just sign up for an ammo delivery service. Like amazon they will deliver ammo on a set schedule to your door.
