Man I should have never sold mine, but I honestly do like my 1st gen runner better.
July, '89 I bought a brand new V6 extended cab 4WD; my first Toyota truck.
130,000+ miles later in '93 I traded in the truck for a brand new V6 4Runner.

Of the two; I wish I would have kept the 4Runner.

I remember the local dealer having a contest of some sort where the grand prize was a Toyota 4x4 pickup, trailer, and two Yamaha WaveRunners - probably 1985 or 1986. I forget what the details were of the contest, but I'd go by the dealership just to drool over that setup. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and can remember teenage dreams of driving around with a California-esque blonde bikini babe to go jet-skiing.

I bought my 1985 pickup in the summer of 1988. Never did own a jet-ski - or have a California-esque blonde bikini babe...

Pretty cool you guys got to enjoy these trucks in their day. I didn't get my first car until 2001, a beater 83 corolla. My 80 pickup was ready for the junk yard when I got it.
1983 was the last year Toyota sold the FJ-40.

Until about '87-'88; Toyota kept used FJ-40s in the dealership used car lot.
I regret not buying one then.
