Not my truck but my moms truck 3 hours away. i’ve changed coil packs plugs and wires so far. the exhausted has been replaced from the cat back since I could probably put my finger through the muffler (assumed it collapsed internal causing at least part of the problem) she replaced the battery, alternator, and starter

basically the truck would start fine cold and will be fine as long as it stays running but when she stops at the store it won’t start when she gets back out if she wasn’t in there long enough. first thought was coil packs so I changed them since everything on it was still original and probably should be replaced anyway I seemed to fix the problem but of course showed back up the day after I left.

my thoughts are something is getting hot under the hood that prevents it from starting but not weak enough to cut it off. I have mechanical experience but nothing with the computers crap that’s in cars now. she had it in the shop twice and they changed the alternator and battery one time and the starter the other time. no codes showing at this time

Edit it has the smaller of the 4 cylinders auto transmission with 4wd

If you remove the gas cap when its hot, does a lot of pressure come put?

my sister tried the gas cap once. it worked the first time but hasn’t since. I think it was by chance that it sat long enough between multiple attempts to start and removing the gas cap and trying again. Same thing happened with a jumpstart pack that “worked”

will it start on quickstart?
i know your not close to do any testing.
weak fuel pump?

can you elaborate on the quickstart? i’m not familiar with that. If you’re talking about a jumpstart battery pack that’s already been tried. fuel pump is original so maybe. I do recall smelling fuel when it was doing the no start bullshit when i was there last. that’s when I decided to change the coil packs

Just going to throw a random idea out there cause my 4runner had a similar issue. Randomly would not start but could be jump started.

Take apart the battery cables, there is a spot where the main cable connects to the clamp and it is notorious for getting crap in between it. I replaced two batteries before realizing all I needed was a scotch brite pad to fix the issue.

spray staring fluid,
Do you think its an electrical problem or a fuel delivery problem, not being there it's going to be tough to tell.

enough voltage to crank, but losing volts to the ECU to tell everything to fire off?

Could be.

I call my mom suggesting getting the fuel pressure check and get this, she said it wouldn’t make sense to be that since it works fine in the winter. apparently it’s been like this over a year but never mentioned anything to me about it until a month ago. I think this is part of her trying to prove to herself that she can still be independent after my stepdad died a few years back. she basically planned her trips around this trucks ability to start. good thing she’s retired

Actually it was the opposite for me. There was enough of a connection for dash lights to come on but not enough for the starter to crank.

If he can pin it down to fuel or spark, it narrows his path,

Sounds like remote troubleshooting going on right now, that makes it tougher.
