Going to spend 12 days in one, August 2nd through the 14th in southern Oregon. The goal is to find some place I want to live and work my mother lives in Florence.
Fly into Eugene,
Drive to Florence for 2-3 days,
Coosbay for 1 night,
Grants Pass for 1-2 nights,
Ashland for 2 nights,
Roseburg for 2 nights,
Then I'm not sure where, maybe the east side of Eugene.

Any must see's along the way ? Waterfalls, hot springs, nice hikes or just cool stuff ? What about good food ?

My skill set is vast, in no particular order
I've made a very good living doing RCA's on equipment and systems.
Looking at production systems and figuring out where the problems were and fixing them, personnel / machinery / flow etc.

Mechanically - very good at troubleshooting pneumatic and hydraulic systems
Better than average at fabrication
HVAC Systems

Production-
Project manager
Field service manager
Shop manager
Purchasing
Planning / Scheduling

Do the Eugene Saturday market if you can, I’m guessing it’s still going but haven’t been there in 20 years.

I grew up in NW Oregon, left 20 years ago and haven’t been back more than twice. The coast is grey and rainy 300 days a year, inland only 270 days a year. Eastern Oregon is ok and divorcing the west side and joining Idaho because of the infection of liberal idiots on the west side.

I lived in Monterey and Santa Cruz for over 20 yrs, I get the gray.
I'm leaning towards Roseburg but I'm concerned I can't handle the mental illness.
Where on the east side would you recommend ?

My SIL lives near Roseburg. I'm not a fan of the area, everything that should have been a ten minute auto parts store stop to grab something and use that to accomplish something, took days and multiple stops and "I can't figure it out, you should just give up" type of conversations.

Last time I was in Eugene, town was basically shut down for most of a week for lack of motivation/skills to shovel out some snow. Whole lot of "we can't do that, it's the city's street/sidewalk" while looking at equipment from hand shovel to road grader, idle.

On the other hand, with your skill set, if you can deal with that, you could become a living deity there.

I have a friend who moved to coos Bay and loves it but he really wanted to be close to the water. Apparently there is lots of great crabbing there.

I'd be paranoid someone would latch the door and I'd be locked in a 150* sweat box

I won’t tell you that I’ve run almost every kind of snow equipment there is. lol

Thanks for the info

What type of mental illness do you speak of in Roseburg?

Any agriculture experience?:flipoff2:

I love the Applegate Valley, it's gorgeous. Roseburg to Medford is some pretty country, Unfortunately it's in OR and is failing rapidly due to their liberal policies. I grew up in N CA just south on the coast but have spent alot of time up in Jackson and Josephine Counties. Medford is probably the most industrial of all the cities on southern OR and has a business base.

If you have time drop down 101 to Crescent City CA and then take 199 back over to Grants Pass along the Smith River. Most beautiful river in the world and you'll see Redwoods if you've never seen them before. Also Highway 138 from Roseburg to Highway 97 along the Umpqua has lots of waterfalls and is a very nice drive and puts very very close to the north entrance of Crater Lake if you've never been there. There is a wild animal park just south of Roseburg that is ok, my kids and wife liked it but as someone who's been to Africa it was meh.

OR Coast Aquarium in Newport is another must stop. It's amazing and you could probably spend a half day there easily. You might run out of time to see everything.

Southern OR is beautiful country but unfortunately it's in OR which was way more better in the 80s and 90s. I'll never move back the area unless it becomes part of ID or the State of Jefferson.

Is that because you have been too busy stacking up all the covid death bodies in the hallways?

Seriously, you are the 3rd dumbest person on this forum.

Sadly I do not think you can make 1st or 2nd so 3rd place it is for you

I'm sure your advice on where to go that you know of from 20 years ago is as solid as any of the shit that spews from your retarded mouth.

Make sure you keep that helmet on, we want you to stay safe

Heceta Head Lighthouse, Devils Churn, stop at The Crazy Norwegian in Port Orford for some amazing fish and chips, there is hiking all over the east side of 101. I'll post more as I remwber. There was a place you could do a rail hand car trip that was pretty damn fun.

We used to stay in Yachats a couple times a year before the family went all psycho over the house, really cool beach.

This. Cape Perpetua is awesome scenery. Nine days isn't enough time! The OR state campgrounds are amazing and the standard by which I measure all other campgrounds. Try staying at the one at Cape Perpetua.

Definitely enjoy the trip, but it would be worth looking at each area as "Would I live here? Yes or no?", then see what job opportunities are actually available in the entire region. You have some good skills and the market can use more good employees, but some cities just don't have many good companies who can offer decent wages. This whole area is expensive for cost of living.

I know it was skimmed over

you are heading to two dune towns, there are rentals if you want to get a taste. Steves in Houser seems to be ok, my daughter took the ATV check ride when she was little, they were all very nice

I particularly like the Oregon Coast, as mentioned the morning marine layer will probably be there, (I like it)
We might be there at the same time, I will wave

Coosbay has some logging history if you are into that, and a casino that half of the people camp at
101 is a nice drive, but you will move at the speed of the slowest person on vacation in the twisties

Coosbay campgrounds are typically ok, reservations are on the .gov and are pretty easy

Jet boats are a thing in the South

I really like Southern Oregon, if it wasn't Oregon I would consider living there, very pretty, you will have fun

My mom lives in Florence Or. and we spent a week last January in an ABB right on Heceta beach. It was like being at home, Santa Cruz/Monterey.

I've run the shit out of tree shakers, does that count ?. I grew up in Truckee and then spent 20yrs in Santa Cruz/Monterey.
Thanks for the info about the waterfalls

Thats exactly the plan. I'm not worried about having a job before I go, I can get work easy enough. I don't need 6 figures anymore, I could be comfortable with 65-70K
I have been contacting the larger growers and wholesalers in the state as I figure that industry isn't going anywhere for a good while. I've had a couple conversations.

Why not just rent a small rv?
Just because. If I can't get a shower in a campground, I'll get an ABB for a night.

FIrst off.. a nice hike in southern oregon in August just is not going to happen:laughing:

65-70k a year shouldnt be all that hard to get. Hell you can do better than that in a damn log truck:laughing:

Coastal area is always nice, I dont get over there often enough. As are all the lil towns between I5 an the coast. That said, there never seemed to be all that much going on. Need something taken care of and you are driving to eugene or medford.

Not sure what its like in the summer time, Probly sucks:laughing:. But Bybee gulch isnt to far up dead indian. Kinda a neat lil spot, thats easy to get to in even a car

To be fair
anything North Ca and up to Alaska is grey in the mornings 300 days a year on the coast

I promise you, that heat is nothing like the heat we have here. We can handle it. I'm not talking about an 8hr hike, I'm fat as fawk, 2-3 hrs is good for me.

Thats perfect, thanks

I would not look at anywhere near the I5 corridor for a place to live
It gets bad, and then badder the more north you do

Been a while since I have been to Coos Bay, but it was still nice. We have talked about picking up property there
