What's new

83 pickup that went full buggy,

this is the old tcase mount going re use part of it to make the 205 mount .

and my rear drive angle will be about 30 at full droop, thinking of 1480 ujoints at each end. maybe 1410 at axle. also flanges at both ends.

Curious how you're going to do the 205 mount. I need to fab something together for mine.

ok

cross member is all built except the tabs needed on the frame.

first i had to figure out where to cut the plate that bolts to the magnum . this was a bunch of look, adjust, look adjust, then mark and cut put back on cut again.

once it was cut i was able to weld the foot the bottom. and it bolted in place with a urethane puck on each side see pic for example

then i made the cross member out of the the old one that supported the toyota tcase. it was 2 inch dom 1/4 wall, maybe thicker, and 1/2 plate
it needed modified a bit, the bends made the bushing end go up into the floor so i cut and redid the angle to help with that.

it does hang down below the frame about a inch or so. but the tranny is above the frame so that's good news. , i can not raise the tcase any higher because the pass seat has to be raised as it is a inch to clear the tcase. but the tcase does sit really flat so there is that.

next trick is getting exhaust to fit into a small area.

one idea is a lake style header, much like what
  • HYDRODYNAMIC did on dust buggy. may or may not have room for that.
  • the brake pedal can more to left for sure
  • i can make a skinny pedal easy day also so the pedals are not the concern

  • again these are just ideas, not sure what will happen lol

also need to work out a carrier bearing of sorts, looking at wide open design so far i like it the best
i also have to cut a section of frame off and rework to fit in the carrier bearing.

I just found this thread today, the Christmas thread led me to IowaOffRoad thread which led me here.

This has won the spot of my favorite thread and I am subscribed.

Not much Toyota left though :flipoff2:

I do want to wheel with you someday. It seems we wheel the same places just not at the same time.

thanks bud

and yes for sure,

plans so far 2023 are disney late april, or early may, iron range in aug

i will peeps updated for sure

i did order the busted knuckle carrier bearing because it had the poly mounts that would allow the bearing to flex just enough. Jake had a great video on the tech section and that sold it for me. i saw someone here make a mount directly off the engine and tranny so it would move with as one with the drivetrain and i thought that was super cool, and i am not doing that so i decided on busted knuckle.

i did get some tubing ordered for exhaust, a bunch of parts that i can try to make a log exhaust manifold. yay.

I will just plan for making it down whenever you go. Let me know when you figure it out so I can get a campspot. We have been staying at Two Moms. The cabins are ok there. They have RV spots last time I went at BMR ‘22. They didn’t have the hookups done yet but hope they would be by next year.

so i started making the exhaust.
interesting challenge. little room on drivers side but came up with a plan,

i will do the 2.5 on both side and they will tie into a 3 inch single all the way to the back

i went with a log / lake style header use 1.75 x.120 wall for the legs from each cylinder and 2.5 inch main tube

and the red line is what will happen tomorrow.

could make them come from the bottom in case you don't have room.

got the passenger side done and the Y pipe. i was reminded if i leave the Y pipe like this it will choke the exhaust this needs to be the spot for the 2.5 to 3, .

not sure if i like the hump in the exhaust being off center to the top of the tranny, i may redo where the bend end up in relation to the center of the tranny.

and i used my ultra sonic cleaner to clean up the valley pan thats below the intake. wow that thing works awesome

i bet it was in the tank at least 2 hours. maybe longer i just let it go and did other stuff.

1672712124446.png

the more i look at this i want to redo it. i know i know but in the shop it did not bother me, looking at on screen it does. plus i can get it closer to the bellhousing and pass side. i see how now.

live and learn...

Maybe add another V-Band at the merge ?

Makes it easier to remove / redo.

i have another v band on order on order actually. i was kinda thinking putting that Y pipe back on by myself would be a pain in the ass with just two v bands,

What's your plan for mitigating the in cab heat?

I was going to suggest maybe going around the front of the engine, but I guess I'm too late :flipoff2:
i looked at front but felt like there was too tight of clearance between frame and engine. but i never gave it a honest try either.

but to keep down on heat i was planning and hoping dyno may and exhaust heat wrap would do the trick. there will be a solid firewall and a heat shield also. not sure though. its a live and learn type of plan going on.

forgot to take some pics, but i did fix that cross over tube in the exhaust.
this weekend plans are to get tcase mount welded in, make my carrier bearing mount and get exhaust started going back.
