83’ Hoe-Yota (Told my Chica it’s for her) - Build

No idea if the truck even works, but it has two 8” subs now.

This bed has a million holes it, what’s a few more. I love RivNuts.

IMG_7335.jpeg

I also moved the tank mounts around a little to make more room. I was going to use 3/8” RivNuts, but the adapter I ordered didn’t work with my RivNut tool. So just regular grade 8 hardware.

Second tank mount ready.

IMG_7338.jpeg

I fixed the long crank start and high idle. Luckily it was the missing vacuum caps. Even after it was still idling at about 1,100rpm. Quick adjustment of the idle screw, and I dropped it down to 950rpm. The truck starts instantly and idles incredibly smooth, throttle response is pretty impressive. I shut off the tank with it running as I need to disconnect the liquid pressure lines. The truck idled for almost 4min with just what was in the lines.

Other than that, I started to tear down the front end for hydro assist and to replace the loose TRE's. All four were really loose, and look like Moog's, or some other low quality TRE.

IMG_7353.jpeg

Gear box, beside being red, is in great condition. Zero leaks, tight, heavy duty Pitman Arm. I just need to make some more clearance for it.

IMG_7355.jpeg

Shocks are faked, and have 3 lock washers.

IMG_7351.jpeg

Yummie! I have some 12" Bilstein 5160's I'm going to install.

IMG_7354.jpeg

Double Nut?

IMG_7356.jpeg

Box is ready for tear down and tapping.

Also had a bunch of bummers today. Cargo Carrier that I ordered was miss delivered, and they can't get me a new one in time for Memorial Day. ECGS sold me the wrong Conversion Bearings, and my PSC Ram is 8" Stroke, and Rock Auto keeps shipping me super old shit.

While I need to source a 6" Ram, here are all the steering parts.

IMG_7357.jpeg

Not sure if I found a TRE "hack", but I couldn't find any information on who was selling what TRE's except for Low Range "Owned by TG" they listed they sell 555 or 3 Five, which is the OE supplier. On Summit Racing they were only $42 each, TG which didn't list any information were like $53, same with Ruff Stuff, theirs were $40, and Stevens Creek Toyota was $63. Surprisingly, The Low Range were actually 555 and came in TG packaging. So I consider that a win, made in Japan as well.

IMG_7358.jpeg

Next let down was the Conversion Carrier Bearing from ECGS. I spoke with them for over 10min. I was very clear that I have a 4cyl Grizzle, and a V6 housing. I've done lots of research on this, and a bearing does exist and it's for a 70's diesel Volvo transmission. I was hoping ECGS stocks it. Randy's Ring Pinion said absolutely so way. There is also a sleeve that can be applied on the locker, but it is unavailable Koyo JR45X50X20 about $20.

4cyl Carrier Bearing: 45mm x 80mm
V6 Carrier Bearing: 50mm x 85mm
Conversion Bearing (4yl Carrier to V6 Housing): 45mm x 85mm

This is what I got from ECGS. Side note, amazing how accurate a plastic $5 Amazon Dial Indicator is lol.

IMG_7359.jpeg

IMG_7360.jpeg

And here is the 4cyl Grizzle.

IMG_7362.jpeg

And on to Rock Auto, this isn't the first old stock item I received this week. I like Dayco Top Cog, I sold tons of these when I worked at Kragen Auto and we never had issues with them, made in USA and very good quality. On the other hand Gates made in Mexico was the "premium' brand. They failed all the time (squeaking after short periods of time) and their Gator Back diagonal Serp belts dislodged quite a bit.

This one is dated 1994, covered in dust and who knows where it came from. but it's made in the USA and cost $3, so I'll keep it as a spare.

IMG_7365.jpeg

Just run a 4cyl 3rd if you have one since you have that 45mm carrier already.

When I did this, I put the locker in the freezer for a couple days and heated up race with a torch. I ended up cracking one of them during install but had a extra, worked great for me.

Sluggy gave me the part number for a race off Amazon to press onto the 4 cyl. Grizzly. The machinist I used took it down a smidge for a perfect fit and chamfered the edge as well. I think the race was like $30?

Found it:

Also I have a psc 6" ram I'd trade you for the 8" of ya want. For the extra belts and ram lines, I like to use HD zip ties and mount them under the hood to the supports.

That was my plan, heat and cold. Were you using a press when it cracked? Maybe I should order 3  Looks like it won't be here in time for Memorial weekend, but I'll get them ordered.

I didn't think to check Amazon smh.

Well, this escalated quickly.

I couldn’t stand looking at the way the mixer was mounted. I had to rip it out. Rusty sheet metal attached with wood screws drilled into the fire wall and fender.

I’m going to make a new bracket that will use some of the factory threaded holes on the fender. I have a feeling the smog equipment used to be mounted here.

IMG_7366.jpeg

Best before pic I have.

IMG_7296.jpeg

While I had it apart, I used some Dawn dish soap and borrowed the Scrub Daddy and cleaned up the fender and firewall.

Ups and down today lol.

Big thanks to Sluggy for swapping my 8” Ram for his 6” Ram, and for him hooking me up with his buddy for the Koyo adapter sleeves for the Grizzly Locker  Sluggy has a badass shop, and hope to see you on the con memorial weekend, I owe you some beers.

IMG_7374.jpeg

I also burned in the axle bracket (horrible picture).

IMG_7375.jpeg

Then things went south, but ended on a positive.

While pulling the Box apart I stripped the 10mm Hex on the centering valve. Was pissed at my self, but after I welded a 1/2 grade 8 nut over it, I realized it was pretty much seized in place. I was able to remove it with my impact, and the treads are salvageable. (I’ll add a pic later)

IMG_7373.jpeg

Then I kept snapping bits drilling out the hydro assist ports. I snapped 4 brand new DeWalt Titanium coated bits while using cutting oil. Two bits I barely got out, and thought I was going to have to scrap the box.

IMG_7378.jpeg

End of the day, I got both ports drilled to 29/32, I like having the fittings a little deeper than recommended 7/16 bore. I need to get a new tap though, so tapping will have to wait till tomorrow.

Almost hit center, but I was already getting close to the edge.

IMG_7379.jpeg

Fawk the sector shaft seal :mad3:

Luckily a perfectly sized socket made it easy to install.

I’m glad I got a rebuild kit. I tore the teflon seal on the steering gear sliding it out, and all the o-rings were sloppy loose when I pulled everything apart. I probably could have gotten away with just replacing the sector shaft dust seal.

IMG_7390.jpeg

Mess
IMG_7391.jpeg

Almost all back together. Tapped just need to install the assist fittings. I’m picking up some hydro line tomorrow from Royal Brass, and hoping to have the steering done by tomorrow.

IMG_7392.jpeg

Build is coming along, I almost have the steering all back together. Another trip to Royal Brass and I should have all the pieces I need.

Steering box is Tapped, cleaned up and painted.

IMG_7399.jpeg

Propane mixer, or what ever you call it is firmly mounted with a a new bracket, that came out really nice. I installed a new vapor hose, and some new Grade 8 Hardware. Bracket ties into existing 8mm x 1.25 holes
/ stud in the frame.

IMG_7403.jpeg

Side note, the DeWalt hood light worked really well.

IMG_7401.jpeg

Also, girlfriend spent 5hrs today cleaning the interior with a carpet cleaner vac and some vanilla scented cleaner. Smells much better than the ballsack and shame the interior had before. I forgot to snap a pick of it after.

IMG_7405.jpeg

Also, Chica wants the 1/2 doors installed for the Con, so hopefully it doesn’t pour like it did last year. I was looking forward to having an enclosed cab for once 😂

Alright, we’re looking decent to make Rubicon.

Critical path:

Propane system
Hydro Assist
Rear bumper
Stereo

I got the propane system all buttoned up. Everything is mounted, new fittings, new heater hoses, rerouted fluid line and tank hook up. Should be good to go.

From the mixer down to the frame rail.

From the frame rail to the bottom of the bed.

From the top of the bed to the tanks.

Steering is pretty much all together, just need to tighten everything up. I picked up the wrong fittings for the Pressure Line from Pump to Steering Gear. Royal Brass gave me Standard fittings, not Metric. I’m going to use the original 42 year old pressure hose, but I ordered the Trail-Gear 16mm x 1.50 to -6 fittings. They should arrive in time so I can bring them as spares incase the original hose fails.

The TRE’s on the center link were seized. Pain to get them freed up.

IMG_7417.jpeg

Should hold.

IMG_7416.jpeg

Made some clearance for the fittings, that I didn’t end up using.

Did I miss them? I don't see the TG stickers. Depending upon the size of the stickers let's others know if you have proper trail etiquette. :flipoff2:

I took them off, there were two giant TG stickers on the Propane Tanks. :grinpimp: Actually, I took almost all the stickers off the truck.

You will forever be approached on the trail with uncertainty for taking those stickers off. Maybe you could even it out by playing some 80's metal so they can hear you coming from a distance?

Would Ace of Base and pounding White Claws also draw uncertainty

I think those things would really put you over into the YotaFag category, so it's all good. :flipoff2:

Now I know someone who drinks that shit.
Cheers!

Ain’t no laws when drinking claws!

Tuesday update.

I got the steering all hooked up, bleed and working perfect, so far. I’m running the factory reservoir and cooler tube loop thing. The system only took about 1 1/2 quarts, so that’s not that great.

One thing I noticed is before the steering had a very loud whine. I used Swepco 715, as I had 3 quarts already, and the steering pump is silent. Pump looks original.

I also adjusted the steering stops as I noticed it steered further right than left.

IMG_7433.jpeg

Girlfriend started working on the cargo carrier that’s going to be mounted over the propane tanks. This is as far as she got lol.

IMG_7434.jpeg

While the tires were off I decided to give them a coat of paint and replace the cracked valve stems. Gold, Rust and chrome is not my thing.

IMG_7418.jpeg

This Nylox surface prep buffer cup, worked amazingly well. And didn’t wear down at all. It was $15 at ACE, but prepped the wheels great. It’s abrasive impregnated nylon.

IMG_7419.jpeg

Used an old trick I saw on YouTube years ago.

IMG_7421.jpeg

Not sure wtf is going on with VHT. This was supposed to be Satin Black. It’s 100% silver flake. I thought it was mislabeled, but Amazon reviews show this is what they are shipping out.

IMG_7430.jpeg

Picked up some Duplicolor Wheel paint from Orielly’s, looks much better.

IMG_7436.jpeg

Here’s the start of my rear bumper. Not stoked on making it out of 1 1/2” .120 square, but it’s what I have and I’m out of time. I forgot to take a pic of these pieces put together.

IMG_7437.jpeg

Stay on the gas! you don't have a larger cooler you could use for the power steering? I'll be at my shop if you want to stop by and grab a used one for free.

That’s an awesome offer! I’m just out of time, hopefully it won’t boil over. It’s still the factory pump so I’m assuming low flow and pressure.

I just got home from work, and this is what it looked like at 6am :skull:
