74 w200 what to expect pulling the rear axle shaft?

i have to replace the wheel cylinder and to do that the drum has to come off soo the hub has to go. i’ve never done this and i’m winding what special tools i need and what to expect. also should a replace the dif oil at the same time?

You can pull the axle shaft and check but you will more than likely have an 8sided/octogon spindle nut.

it should be a 2 9/16s socket right

most likely yes. Unless you suspect the oil is beyond old or just unknown quality there's no need to replace it.

ok, I have one side all pulled apart. it ended up taking me longer to find the socket than it did to take it apart. it was a 2 3/8 too.
