My wife is looking at buying another SUV

Currently drive a 2002 Excursion 2wd 7.3l. At 350K miles, it's time for injectors, glow plugs, fuel system, & chip. Somewhere around 3-4k of work. It's been mostly reliable, as long as I stay on top of things. Little things, like the body control module have failed.

Now she's looking at honda Pilots  new, they're north of 35K, closer to 47K

I'd prefer to not spend anywhere close to that. Does anyone have any recommendations? Doesn't have to be new, but newer is better.

Do you need to fit 7 adults, or just maybe like kids and Cotton Hill in the back row? If your rear seat passengers don't have shins, my folks have 3x XC90s, a pair of turbo I5s and a N/A I6, they've liked them so much they old ones have been retired to farm duty as they've gotten new ones.

We had a 2010 Armada. Had 20k miles when we bought it, 190k miles when we sold it and had no major issues with it. We bought a 2018 Armada from Vroom with 32k miles for a few thousand dollars less than KBB and local used pricing. They are former rental cars but I don't care if it saves me money. So far it has been great. The AWD system is much better on the 2018 than the 2010 IMO. My daughter's AWD Volvo XC90 did not do nearly as well in the snow and ice.

Edit: If a minivan will do: 2020 Toyota Sienna xle loaded gray leather interior white outside all the buttons sunroof. Ky. rebuilt title can be licensed in any state. 22900 miles. Asking 22995.00 call # click for number visi... https://www.lsn.com/vans/2020-toyota-sienna-xle/6534074.html?ref=share-api

Some options having rented many cars:

-Ford Flex. I was surprised sitting in the 3rd row of this thing. Decent space back there, easy to get in and out. If you are looking to step down in overall vehicle size I'd consider this. If you've got all seats filled for a road trip, expect to use a hitch rack or throw crap on top.

-Chevy Traverse. On the fence with these. Great space inside, its basically a minivan with normal people doors. However I haven't heard great things about reliability. That said, driver position, gadgets, ease of use, and interior space are all great. The main issue is it is a blob car. I'll rent one in a heartbeat.

-Ford Expedition/Chevy Tahoe/Expedition Max/Suburban. Obviously. The Expedition Max will feel right at home coming from an excursion. Same with the burb. Once again, I've ended up in many a 3rd row of a burb black car in whatever city (young guys get thrown in the back, lol). No complaints riding in one. I'd seriously consider this class if compromising on space is not an option. I'd lean more toward ford as they seem to be more reliable. Although latest generation chevy tahoe/burb is effing slick AF.

-Nissan Armada. You can LOAD these things up and it still goes. I was surprised. Great road car, easy to drive. I've rented two of em for cross country drives. Decently impressed. I think the Infiniti version is better, I'd go that route.

My 2005 Dad-Wagon Ford Freestyle can fit a bunch of people. Two in front, two in middle, and three far back. Super basic car and AWD. Love that thing.

My mom just picked up a 2015 explorer for decent money. Nice car, seats 7, awd.

Government Job and a Freestyle? You better leave some excitement for the rest of us. :flipoff2:

Right?

Man, I snagged that thing for like $3300 and had 61k miles on it. I freaking stole it. Its a stupid, boring, car. But there's nothing to it and its been great. Wife loves it.

I've got my motorcycles to enjoy. :flipoff2:

my wife had no complaints about her mazda cx9.
Son loves his jeep commander as well.

5th gen 4runner....

But need more info.. .going from an excursion to a mid-size is a big change.

Suburban and that's pretty much it. Even Tahoe/Expedition platforms get overcrowded with 7 and your cargo space is effectively limited to 0 at that capacity.

Fucking love my wife's Sienna. Taken it on a few vacations with me, wifey, two kids around 8 and my aging parents. It also tows trailers very well*

Zero complaints**

*smaller trailers, like double ski-doo trailers and smaller.

**it's obviously not an offroad type vehicle, obviously.

Wait until the Haldex goes bad. There’s your excitement.

Wife had a Honda pilot and we just sold it to a junkyard with 350k or so on it (she ripped drivers door off and trashed the rest of car but mechanically awesome) and got her a Mazda CX9, both vehicles are nice and pretty roomy for a midsize SUV.

I mean, honestly if your primary goal is to haul people that's exactly what minivans are designed to do. If you're routinely hauling 7 people around and not looking to do much else with the vehicle, then the best bet is probably to swallow your pride and go buy that ugly ass boring minivan.

Ah, the AWD jobber.

Something I also wanted to add about one of those vacations I did with the Sienna....

Dad works for a rental company, so he can get rentals for extra cheap but minivans are almost never available. He picked up a 7 passenger durango instead. Second row people are very cramped (compared to minivan) and third row people better not even have legs. Behind the third row was room for 1 suitcase thick.

We ended up just taking my van.

My wife just got a Passport and it's pretty sweet! You can get 10% off MSRP if you really work it on them, it seemed like they are more willing to deal on Pilots though. They've also got 0% financing right now. :homer:

2015 Armada has been good to us. It will hold 8, has good power, and was way cheaper than a comparable Tahoe or Suburban. The downside is the mileage is about 13-14 in town 18 highway, and the interior is a little cheap/fragile.

It has still been great though. No regrets.

if you service them they don't go bad.

134K on a volvo in my driveway, still does AWD donuts.

You may have just jinxed yourself :flipoff2:

if his hasnt been serviced yet it could be doomed already. Some cars they make it nearly impossible and put the thing 2mm away from a blazing hot catalytic converter. :homer:

Is it awd? I love those things

I bought a 2012 X5 diesel a while back for a daily and love it. Its had all the emissions junk removed and has a JR2.8 tune which bumps it up to 390hp 600tq. Its fun to drive, gets great mileage and you can get them with 3rd row seating (mine doesn't have 3rd row) I also did a transmission tune which really woke it up and was easy to do via a cheap Android tablet and doggle

Meh, all crap can go wrong. My FIL had a Freestyle. Had something like 330k on it until a tree landed on it in a parking lot. Never needed a thing.
