Ok… it may have been used earlier, but this was the event that made it part of our vocabulary.

November 18, 1978.

Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones tells his followers to “Drink the Kool-aid” (actually Flavor-aid). Hundreds of his followers followed his instructions and drank the poison laced beverage.

That makes it worse

I remember watching live news coverage of men in spacesuits walking through the bloated corpses...I was 6.

Good article:

That is messed up. I guess I never knew they were aware of what they were doing. I thought it was just "kool aide party day!".

The American Scandal podcast on Jones Town is really good if you want a deep dive from Jones' beginning to murderous end. There were plenty of warning signs and opportunities to stop him.

Jones' acolytes killed a congressman and some staff that were there investigating them, just before the Kool Aid party.

Not unique, I remember this one as a kid but no mass suicide .. I'm pretty sure they would have drank the coolaid if ordered

"The Rajneeshees were a religious cult that established a community in Antelope, Oregon in the 1980s:

  • The Rajneesh Movement
Founded by Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (also known as Osho), the movement was based on free love, joy, and positivity.

  • Rajneeshpuram
The community was established in 1981 on the 64,000-acre Big Muddy Ranch, just outside of Antelope. The community was named after the guru and was a mix of Eastern and Western spirituality, organic farming, and recycling.

  • The Rajneeshees' activities
The Rajneeshees were involved in several controversial activities, including:

      • Bioterror attack: In 1984, the Rajneeshees were responsible for a bioterror attack that sickened over 150 people with salmonella.

      • Assassination plot: The Rajneeshees planned to assassinate the United States Attorney for the District of Oregon in 1985.

      • Taking over Antelope: The Rajneeshees briefly took over Antelope and renamed it Rajneesh.

    • The collapse of Rajneeshpuram
The community collapsed due to a number of factors, including:

        • Murder plots

        • Poisoning attack

        • Political intimidation

        • Illegal wiretaps

Today, much of the former Rajneeshee property is in disrepair, but some structures remain, including a runway, bus stop sign, fire hydrant, garage buildings, dining hall, water tower, and concrete platform"

When I was a kid, my parents took us to the Jersey shore. We brought coolade mix. My brother and I decided to mix up a bunch. We liked it real sweet, so we mixed in lots of sugar. It was horrible. If you didn’t guess, we used salt. I’ll never forget that.

I was 12. So many bodies.

I was 9...remember back then it was absolutely horrifying.

Now it happens (via sideways shooting bangers) on a long weekend in Chiraq and no one thinks twice about it.

no correlation here, chief.

50 in a weekend shot, fatality rate is usually 10%.... this guys killed everyone.... almost 1000 people.

Not even close to the same thing.

We see dead people all the time now. In 78 you couldn't even rent Faces Of Death.

maybe. but Bud Dwyer and Gary Plauche etc. You saw those things sometimes.

But you still dont today, in chicago, see a field with dead bodies of women and children that almost number 1,000.
