Stolen from some other place... going to document ongoing project here

late 2017, we bought a house with a 30x40 shop out back. Shop was divided down the middle with 30x20 work area and 30x20 1 bedroom apartment the homebuilder lived in while building the house. Its stick built, but none of the apartment shit is load bearing so it was an easy tear out.

The bad- one damn door and its a freaking 7x16, and 9ft ceiling. Fucking dirt track guys.

So I'm tearing out the apartment, and leaving the bathroom. Its got a washer/dryer hookup in it, water heater, shower, etc and will be a nice junk storage room plus quiet space for air compressor. Its on the front, so no adding a 2nd door... BUT if this place turns into forever home ill build a bigger bath/storage off the side and tear this out adding a second door. Bathroom is 9x14.

There's a 12x40 lean to built off the back of the shop. One end has the floor trussed in a 10x12 area for a shed. Went ahead and sheded that in, got the kids helping.

So this is going to be part shop, part kids play area. Fridge and cabinets around it are staying. TV in that area so the kids will have cartoons to not watch. Had access to a bunch of leftover flooring, so I made a goofy looking wall.

Had a couple of leftover light switches, so I ran 2 leds up in the attic to help with storage and future wiring etc. Holy shit i should have done this on day one. Top 5 best mod ever. Also, I did a little strip of osb down the middle of the trusses which made it easier getting around up there. I also floored an 8'x8' area around the attic door.

Got some free tear out cabinets from my neighbor... little sanding and some paint and everything looks decent and matches. And was free.

Painting everything white, getting every last little lumen out of the leds

If you have bare OSB in your shop/garage... PAINT IT.

Cheated with the wiring up by the door and built a stick out with removable cover for the switches and plugs. "Crown molding" is all 3/8 plywood and hides the gaps nicely.

Sometime last year, I finally ran some 220 so I could use the real welder. You guys would be proud... i actually did it all proper-like with one run from the panel and used conduit like the grownups

Last bit of wall painting, all I have left is that far right corner. It used to be the bedroom closet, and is going to be some big ass built-in shelves.

LED ghettoness- like most, these hang with chains and S hooks. But I have stupid 9ft ceilings, and want them surface mount. Upon inspection, there's micro wires running through the main center channel. So, shake light while laying on its side, and drill holes through the body while praying to the copper gods you don't hit a wire. Boom, now there's 3" deck screws holding them to the ceiling. I did all 16 of them without hitting a wire.

One more thing... the one light directly behind the garage door opener and the one at far left of the pic are separate wired direct to the opener. Pop the door at night with everything off, and 2 of these are plenty enough light to see well, and a million times brighter than the 100w equivalent led bulb in the opener.

Carport is going to be free standing, "almost" up against the shop (1-2"?).
24x24 at the roof, 22x22 at the post corners. 6 posts, 3 headers, some purlins and steel roof. 8ft at the bottom of the header, almost flat roof with a tiny slope away from shop.

Local steel recycler hooked me up with posts and headers... 4" square tube .188 wall (24ftx3) and 2x4 .250 wall (24ftx3) for $450. Once I get all this up I'll buy purlins (6") and once that's done ill get a roof. Cutting and painting most of this before it goes up and buying it along the way to keep down the stack of clutter.

Oh, and last year I got 3 loads of SB2 and finally made a driveway. Also made a drive across the front of the shop for extra parking.

Yup, lighting in attics should be fuckin' code. First thing I do when I've got work in attics is find the closest power and install a permanent light and switch.

Difference between night and day.

Agreed x1000. I got some up in the house attic too now. Fold down steps, flip switch, holy shit i can see what I'm doing.

Front shot of the shop. FYI we bought this as new house in the woods with no yard, have been slowly making a yard. Still have a ways to go but its getting there. Current push is get my carport built so i can keep my truck and drive to work beater out of the sun/weather

I did the exact same thing. I was looking at the chains shaking my head thinking “silly lights, you’re surface mount now”. I wasn’t quite as careful as you and found the wires with my first deck screw

Yea the hanging chains was cool in my old shop, but it was standard steel construction I-beam and purlins and (relatively) high bay. I ain't hanging a DAMN thing off a 9ft ceiling.

I thought about cutting some thin 2" angle and JB Welding a bracket off each end to screw to the ceiling, but i went the fast/easy route instead.

Got 3 posts in the ground and set up nicely... off work today so the plan was to get them cut to set height and weld the cap plate over the top. Then the rain hit. Oh well, now I'm just day drinking with AIC blasting, sitting in front of a big fan.

I'll get the plates cut and ready for all 6 posts and if it quits raining (it wont) get these done. My old man is coming over this Sunday to help hold a tape so I can get the triangulationism figured out and set the other 3 posts.

Cutting and capping posts today. Almost a flat roof, 5" drop over 22 feet

If you zoom in you can see the yellow line

Headers are up and everything is primed. Made some little gussets out of 1" square tube. Ignore the nasty ass FCAW :flipoff2:
