Looking to get a 450 upper for an AR I’m picking up. Already have a dedicated 5.56 and 7.61x51, so 450 it is. Any suggestions on manufacturers? Looks like 20” barrel is ideal for this round, but not aposed to a 16/18”. Looking at Davidson Defense at the moment. I will be putting optics on it and it will be a hunting/ on the tractor gun.
Or tell me to go 6.8 spc or 6.5 grendel

Mine is a Faxon 16” barrel. Aero XL upper receiver. Leupold VX Freedom .450.

It has put a few pigs down. It’s not my favorite gun by any means, but it serves a purpose I guess. I hunt with my 6.5 Grendel more than with this one…

My brother has one, uses it mostly for hogs in TX. Puts them down with 1 shot as well as a 308. Kicks about as much as a 12 GA.
Of the big bore ARs it seems to have the best ammo avaliability in most stores.

I prefer on my Grendel, but there aren't any hogs around here. 20" is pretty long, but to get the most out of either round 16" is leaving velocity on the table. I wouldn't mind having a 6.8 SPC, but I wonder about ammo in the future.

Depends on what ranges you are going to be looking to shoot at. Over 200 yards and the Grendel wins hands down. Under 100 and the thump of the 450 is doing some damage.

My buddy put one together. He was going to go 458 socom but I talked him into the 450. I believe his upper is from bear creek.

That was the one of the two things I found as a negative on 458S when I made that choice. I built the 458S.
Also I consider 458 to be a bigger brother to 300 BO. 450 is more of a rifle round in my opinion.

I can't speak on .450, but a full size barrel on a tractor doesn't sound idea.

I've shot bunches of different AR round, but after building a 6.8 rifle and 12.5" pistol I will never look back. It is a hog slaying, deer dropping, coyotes exploding round. I love it and it's small enough to have it on the tractor or truck. :smokin:

* I do shoot suppressed as should everyone else especially on a AR pistol

What twist are you using with what length/weight bullet? Seeing 1:16 and 1:24 options. Would think 24 would suffice, maybe notice a little difference if I want to go with the Super Suppressed rounds and a 16 twist.

BUCKLAND , Did you end up with a Davidson Defense? Was looking at them the other day as their prices were pretty low. Considering BCA so I can get side charging at a good price and Made in U.S.A. claim.

A big bore AR would be cool.

Your goona use a 6.5 Grendel more often though. Would get an 18" over a 20" barrel.

That said, once I burn up all my 6.5grendel ammo, I gotta hunch that rifle will get a 6 arc barrel

I bought a bushmaster upper, pita.

It wouldn't cycle, I "fixed" it myself bushmaster wasn't going to change the barrel so it wasn't worth sending it back.

It’s a candidate for a clamp mounted gas block.

That “grip” makes me sad.

I built a 458 socom after going back and forth between it and the 450. The 450 has some real advantages - more powerful, better chance of finding ammo in stores. But in the end I went 458 due to the availability of shorter length barrels, that it would just work with mags I already own and there being more data on gassing with cans

Ended up going with a 8" tromix barrel. Its quite entertaining to shoot and I could see myself grabbing it if someone was breaking in, don't have to worry if they are wearing a heavy jacket. I've also been toying with the idea of designing an integrally suppressed 458 ar barrel for the business side.

Only have pic of the upper on hand.
