What's new

.40 S&W dead dying caliber?

Thought 10mm came first but too many small handed fed boys couldn’t handle it so it was shortened and now we have GLAWK FORTY’S!

.40 pisses me off, no one but the scrapyard buys that brass. Always getting nice and deep like in .44 mag cases, it’s a cozy home for 9mm
If you're armpits deep in .44 Mag brass, send me some.

how the hell are you just going to erase what was at one time a top 3 popular semi auto round?

.38 S&W was once a very popular round, adopted by a lot of police forces & was THE round for British Commonwealth countries for 40+ years, you tried shopping for those lately?

Time marches on, things change, what is, becomes what was.

I've got a single .40 in my collection, a surplus G22 I bought from a coworker/new dad that needed diaper money. I've got maybe 400 rounds of .40 left. I'm usually opposed to selling guns, but have thought about letting it go. I'll probably just give my ammo to my LEO, BIL (their department still uses .40 for service weapons) and stick a 9mm conversion barrel in the G22.

I was going to do the exact same thing because I wanted a longer 9 than my M&P shield or G43X, but when I got to the gun shop to talk about the conversion I picked up the HK VP9 and loved the feel of it. Bought it, glad I did, really like shooting it and kept the G22 as is. I still have and can get 40 so I'll hang on to it.

.

.40 needs to stick around. I shoot .40 out of my .357 sig to save a few nickels here and there.
I hope you're changing the barrel first.

I have a Glock 33 compact in .357 Sig, and a G31C. I have over the years run into a few deals where someone got rid of their gun but still had a few boxes, so I give them $20 per and I ended up with a good amount of quality ammo. I still take the compensated pistol to my Wednesday Night Steel events in case they have the shitty spinner that needs more ass to turn over, but usually shoot 9mm on all the other stages.

I started out with a Ruger P90DC in .40 and a Sig P230S in .380. Yeah, I got rid of both those guns and the ammo, but I'm keeping the .357 Sig, which I got when there weren't a lot of good 9mm choices, because I still think it's a cool round.

I ahve 2 357Sig (HKP2000 and 229) and will buy more if I find, get a good deal on them. And still buy ammo here and there.

I really like shooting my buddy’s .40 p229. He’s offered me a deal on it, but if (when) I add a pistol caliber it would be 10mm.

If a ranger can get the job done, a .40 cal will just do it with power to spare :flipoff2:
I have a 45 ACP and could use Duramax power when I don’t feel like using the 2wd Tacoma. 🖕😃🖕

This is the part I’m confused about. That is what happened. But why bail on an established platform? There has to be millions of .40’s out there. Ammo is still cheaper than 10 mm or 45 acp (or almost every other comparable caliber). Do people really think it’s that bad to shoot .40? That they won’t shoot it again? Sell all the pistols in that cal and stop buying the ammo?

I bought my first .40 because of Barrack Obama in 09 and there being a solid year or more where you couldn’t find a single round of 9mm on the shelf. But there wasn’t a single time I walked into Walmart or Cabellas that I couldn’t by .40 s&w. Also couldn’t get .22 lr in that time. I’m not married too .40 cal I’m just disappointed to see everyone abandon it.

I’m sure some of you remembers things a little differently and 9 was never hard to get where you lived. In GJ Colorado in 09~10 9 was scarce
Why bail?

Money. When the government money goes away so does the demand. It doesn’t matter how many exist. Just look at 30-06 and 7.62x51 and 308.

I have all of those obsolete calibers too 🤣. When I hunt it’s with 30-06. I’m a stubborn ol antique.

When I was a kid, all my dad's hunting buddies used a 30-06, or a 30-30, and this was in CA and CO, so 200+ yard shots.and I don't remember tracking blood trails, they were DRT or nearby. Even after Dad switched to .243 for a while, still Bambi was DRT. Then everybody went .308, and Bambi was still DRT.

FBI wanted more power so the 40 became popular.
FBI wants more bullets so 9mm is becoming more popular.

9mm is the younger brother. 45 is the older brother. 40 is the middle child. Too much recoil for some, and not enough power for others.

No. Feebs new lineup of agents werent able to deal with the recoil of the .40 so they switched. How many shootouts do the feebs get into where they need more bullets?

Have a couple .40 glocks, they sit in the safe more than anything. Range days in the backyard are the most use they see. It’s a popular caliber here based on the stock at the LGS. They had a big section of it a few weeks ago almost the size of the 9MM area.

10MM is gaining popularity here, it’s now got more that a couple random boxes on the shelf. Use to be behind the counter and only one or two offerings. I’m a big fan of 10MM and carry a G20 or G40 on the property all the time.

Still a bunch of guys shooting 30-06 and 30-30 here, we are a stubborn bunch who hate change. I’ve shot an 30-06 more than any other caliber in a bolt gun.

Last year the old man was still hunting with his 30-40 Krag because he loves that gun and can.

Same for us except the 30-30. Never saw anyone hunt with one until I was an adult. 30-06 was a great round.

400 corbon is what the real gun people shoot :flipoff2:

My first centerfire handgun was a 40. It was also my last 40. However I can get police trade in 40 cals stupid cheap. Its tempting to have one on hand since in the last few ammo panics 40 was still widely available. Lots of production left out there and with police and military not needing it there is far less demand

40 is an effective round, so is 45 and 9mm.
Shot placement is still the most important thing.
If you hit someone with any of them more than a graze they are going to the hospital or morgue.
I have several 40s and they aren't going anywhere. I also have 9mms, 10mms, 45s and 44s.
Lots of police trade in 40s selling cheap right now. Was going to sell a beretta 96 at a local shop, and he said it would just sit and not sell. Brother decided he wanted it, so it went to him.

40 has lost favor with the tacticool crowd. Who cares. it is still an effective round with great terminal performance.

You know that you can buy 9mm conversion barrels for the Glock .40’s? If you’re concerned about absolute reliability, you can trade out the ejector and extractor as well. It only takes a few minutes and you have, essentially, a multi-cal pistol.

I still use 40 s/w in 3 sigs.

Don't have a glock in 40s&w, but am well aware of conversions. For my sig in 40 I found a good deal on a complete 9mm slide. Have it as a backup, but have lots of 40 and the 3 extra rounds I'd get with a 9mm doesn't matter for me.

I wouldn't turn up my nose at a .40 but all else being equal I'd rather just stick to 9 for handguns.

Glock still has the newer gen stuff in .40,
No shit. Money talks. They sell a fuckton of guns to pigs. Wouldn't wanna lose out on the sales to all the departments that are still stuck on 40. They'd offer .41 long colt if there were departments using it.

9mm bullet performance is much better than it was. Folks need more bullets and softer recoil for all those tactical scenarios they are running from the couch. 10mm now, :), I think Instill have some of the original Norma and SuperVel ammo. That stuff was a bit spicy and helped find all the sharp edges on the original Delta’s.

I've got a full size and compact HK USP in .40 SW, and they aren't going anywhere. The compact is on my CCW, although I rarely carry it since it is still too big.
