Sounds like you have a pretty good understanding of how an open bolt gun functions, to me.
It was only theory, because I've never fired only. I've only seen a video of a semi auto .22 that fired from an open bolt. I really don't understand how the firing pin & hammer work, or are they all fixed firing pin?

Bingo. In most cases.
No hammer. Just a search that holds the bolt back.
Some have fixed firing pins, some have firing pins that are activated when the bolt closes all the way.
The atf in it's infinite wisdom has deemed that open bolt guns are too easily converted to full auto and therefore too dangerous to be owned by us mere plebes.

LWRC made a AR pattern rifle that fired full auto from a open bolt. No idea how many they made or if they still do.

If you really want to explore some machinegun complexities, there are a few that fire from closed bolt in semi and open in auto. I think the FG-42 did. There are closed bolt conversions for the Uzi and open bolt conversions for the 10/22. Colt made a few M16 variants that were OB. The port firing weapon is one. Marlin made the mdl.50 back in the day that was an OB .22 semiauto rifle, as did Voere. If you can imagine it, it’s probably been done.

I read an article about a uzi conversion in American rifleman, but I was pretty 12 yo and I don't really remember too much :homer:. I've seen ads in firequest for "rhe ultimate 10/22 full auto open bolt conversion" book.

The oow unit is closed bolt i believe, but never a machine gun.
The Israelis had all kind of weird machine guns there for a bit. Didn't they love the madsens?
Pretty sure it is brazilian police you see online tromping around in modern riot gear toting 100 year old madsens. I know they still had a bunch until a few years ago
