Anyone have a set I could borrow?
My best friends dad passed away, and I'm trying to make the rifle he built back into a shooter. Before he passed he told me it had headspace issues, I was able to put about 20 pieces of scotch tape on the back of a factory round and still close the bolt so leads me to believe he was correct. Looks to be an old sporterised Mauser.

nope, his dad died about a week after I got it, he told me it was 30-06, but to be fair he was absolutely on his way out. If I can find anyone with an 8mm local I can try to see if one chambers.

Pull the action out of the stock, and post pics of any and every marking you can find. If it was professionally converted to 30-06 the barrel would be stamped with that caliber. Otherwise it will still have the factory markings... Unless someone DIY'ed a conversion to who knows what.

If you have a good digital caliper, measure the barrel diameter land-to-land and groove-to-groove.

We can figure this out pretty easily unless it's a mystery DIY gun. But if a good factory 30-06 cartridge has excess headspace (measure it to confirm that it's the right length) it won't be 8mm Mauser, as the 30-06 is a longer cartridge...

I’m pretty sure it’s a mystery DIY gun lol. He did mention building it himself, but it was hard to get good details out of him.

OH that's not a K98... I assumed wrong when I read "Sporterized Mauser" as those are usually K98's. LOL

If you can pull the stock off there should be more markings worth seeing.

I thought about that first, but looked at saami drawings because I remember a Mauser with a 30-06 round rattling inside it I thought it was 8mm. The shoulder on a 8mm case is a little larger dia., so maybe it goes I don’t know without doing the math.

I guess I should have clarified...

Length to the bottom of the shoulder, then the top of the shoulder, and then to the top of case neck. Diameters are good too.

Someone else will need to confirm as I'm not the most knowledgeable about surplus bolt guns. Is this a M1917 Enfield rifle? The left side of the action looks a little different...

I've asked a few people, and nobody can put a pin on that action.
I did get what you meant for me to measure, just including what I've done so far.

Maybe a 1914 Enfield? Still not quite right. Could be modified though.

BUT... I did just run across a 1914 Enfield chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum, which is definitely a bigger cartridge (but also larger diameter which would be obvious).

For curiosity, do the bolt numbers match the receiver? Just thinking maybe it’s got the wrong bolt in it.

Interesting! Never heard of the 1917 Eddystone, only the Enfield.

Same pressure to close the bolt as an empty chamber. Now what?

Did you ever pull the stock to find all the markings? Have you found anything on the barrel to confirm that it's actually 30-06?

Oh and the next step would be to make a Chamber casting to check what it really is, and confirm how far out of spec it is.

No and no but I’m guessing it needs to come apart anyway.

My dad grew up with a Swedish mauser in 30-06. He bought a barreled action and carved a stock for it because they were poor. I have that rifle and it shoots lights out. Not sure if it would help or not but I could go take pictures. I am not pulling the wood though. The gun shoots to good to fuck with.

That is a 1917 Enfield action made by Eddystone, there were several contract manufactures. It would have been 30-06 originally. Yours looks like it was sporterized pretty well.

If you need an 8mm round I have that, no gauges. Welcome to try it

Found some once fired brass from it, seems solidly a -06, no apparent case stretching just what I’m assuming is a deformed primer from the head space issue.
