2RZ Questions-EZ

A turbo is pretty easy since the factory ECM can handle about up to about 8-10 boost. Pink top injectors, t3/t4 turbo, turbo manifold, intercooler and you are good to go. Anything more than that will require an aftermarket ECM. Here's a pic when I was doing mine..

You have any regrets on your turbo setup? It’s the next logical step for me but I hate to give up the stupid reliability of stock

I have a freshened up 3rz in my buggy. Nothing crazy, deleted the balance shafts, basic rebuild, fresh injectors, 2rz stock shorty header v-banded. I'm pretty happy with it over all.

My particular engine the rear balance shaft bearings were trashed, so I deleted them. 2rz squirter, rotated bearings and plugged the oil port. It's my biggest complaint, my buggy has some seriously strange harmonics that run through it. My friends buggy is exactly the same but has balance shafts and no stupid harmonic vibration.

I’ve found that stopping the balance shafts from spinning/existing on a 3RZ in a crawler is non-negotiable. I completely wasted one bottom end, noticed that the rear balance shaft bearings were basically non existent during the tear down. Then in the other motor, noticed glitter in the oil again before too long. Tore it down and found the rear balance shaft bearings trashed and mains torn up from debris through them. Saved it by throwing new mains in it and cut the chain for the balance shafts.

First set of mains from the motor I pulled in the winter of 2017. Still had oil pressure within Toyota spec too somehow.

Second set I caught in time to not trash the whole bottom end during the summer of 2020.

The replacement set of mains I pulled for inspection in 2021 and 2023 that look great after lots of runtime with the balance shaft chain cut out.

None as of yet. I've only had it out a handful of times though. Packaging the turbo was kind of involved but worth it. Mainly due to faults of my own..

Putting this info away for a rainy day. :homer:

Yeah, they trash balance shafts bearings from oil starvation. It still sucks though without them, it's my biggest complaint about it TBH. I have any issue with it it's history.

So first tank, some idling (alot while working on it etc) was 15 MPG. 36's, 2"BL in a 91 $runner. I am thinking there is another MPG or so in it, but I am happy. I would say that the power is better than a 22RE for sure. Will pull 65 on the flat with lots of pedal left. Not massively more powerful, but enough. Runs nicely and engine is quiet etc.

Not earth shattering, but I wanted 15-16 MPG that I could drive to work every day. Seems to fit the bill. Love this thing.
