RIP 68RFE, I still can't believe that transmission is a thing in 2024.

I am stoked for this transmission. ZF is behind it, so I am sure it will be a success. Their 8HP70 and variants (75/80/90/etc.) are behind everything from 1500s to hellcats and stand up to abuse. I hear about a ton of 8/10 speed GM complaints and I rarely hear about a ZF 8HP complaint. I believe the 8HP variants are behind some BMWs as well.

As for the 1k torque rating I am sure there are variants in this just like they have in the 8HP line. ZF is making this a powerline and it can go in "baby class 8" trucks, class 7 too. It is a broad powerline that is tailored to the OEM once they get to that point. I wouldnt count Ram out for putting more then 1k out in front of it.

I am not too concerned about 8 vs 10 speeds. 6 to 10 is a big jump, ford and GM went 6 to 10 but 8 is still plenty for these new engines with wide power bands that aren't as dependent on RPM.

That's more what I was looking for. I don't really care about new truck stuff, because I'm not going to buy one :lmao:

After another 30 years they might address that.

I dont own new shit nor will I but I guess I'm not sold about having 37 gears when all I'm reading is its constantly hunting for shit.
Being in old shit, I can see the need for more gears. I think 10 is probably overkill and 6 is sufficient but 8 is probably a good happy medium for light duty to medium duty trucks.

Bmw has been using the 6 and 8hp boxes for a while and they are outstanding.

I also dont have much experience towing heavy shit. Im driving a 4 cylinder Tacoma that feels like a rocket ship compared to my old DD Honda Civic. :homer:

10 speed auto are ridiculous, cant get up the power band before its skipping 2-3 gears to get up there. no thanks.

ive loved my 6 speed Aisin for many years. dont want to upgrade out of my 2017 for a long while, but i am glad they are going with the ZF transmission.

sadly, Ford's diesels got even shittier once they jettisoned Navistar. i mean, say what you want to about the 6.0 and 6.4, atleast it didnt have a ticking time bomb CP4 pump in it that costs $13,000 to fix when it lets go.

It's only $2k in parts to swap out the CP4 with a better one before it fails. Buy truck, spend the 2K on the replacement and drive on. Easy peasy

Most people can't change a tire, let alone an injection pump. The vast majority of the guys with these trucks aint doing their own wrenching. $2k used to be a decent gasser crate engine.

sigh

so you get a new cp4 pump? or you swap to a different pump?

Good job Ram, you finally put a transmission behind a diesel that will last. Nothing more infuriating than my wifes 2012 Q7 TDI having a ZF8 in it and my 2012 Ram 3500 having a shitbox 68rfe:laughing: Guess which one tows the boat better?

Relative to what though, a BMW that needs constant and inexplicably expensive maintenance and is falling apart after 100k?
186k miles on my bmw pile of shit.
Not a single light on the cluster and I'd drive it cross country today.
Hell, the entire cooling system is factory with the exception of the water pump and one hose.
The problem with bmws is the owners. Specifically the ones that bought a used bmw and are too fucking poor to maintain it properly.
I'm poor, but I can turn wrenches, so it works out for me.
You can buy an awful lot of euro luxury car for the money because they have terrible reputations, but in my experience they do not require abnormal amounts of repair. Sure, I didn't enjoy buying a 400 dollar electric water pump, but even fucking Chevies have that shit now.
