Ok so I recently was given a 20" Apex disc grinder. It is 240V and was hard wired into a small sub panel where he used the circuit breaker as the on/off switch. I'm using it a location where I'm gonna have it plugged into a 240V outlet in my wall so I need to wire in an on/off switch into a pedal box I'll mount into the sander with a cord out to plug in. I've seen some on Amazon but they vary so much in quality front china and I want to buy it once and have a good switch. What switch have you used and would recommend for me to use for this. Thanks.

Get a contractor with motor overloads. Or a square d compressor motor starter control box.

Well I looked into this machine deeper and I was wrong in every aspect besides it being an apex. It's actually a 16" sander disc sander and the motor is a 1hp 3 phase 1750 rpm motor. So now I'm gonna look for a replacement 120v motor so I can use this thing the 2-3x a year is need it. Thanks for the replies guys.

A cheap 110v VFD would be cheaper and allow speed control as well as the ability to use any outlet.

Usually No I believe. 240, 240 out.

If you stay 3 phase I used this for a 2hp 3ph grinder. I added the start stop switch in the old switch that was shot.

Would a 110v vfd operate the 240v 3 phase motor?
Usually No I believe. 240, 240 out.

That one linked says 120v single phase in, 230v 3 phase out. That's the first one over 1/2hp that I've seen that will do that. I use a small Automation Direct 1/2 HP on on my little Craftsman lathe and at the time it was the biggest I could find without going up to 220v.

I accidentally bought a 110 in, 110 3 phase out VFD because I didn't read the specs. I still have no idea what the actual application for that is....but if I ever do, I have one sitting on the shelf.

If it sits on the shelf for too long the caps go bad. Hook it up to power at least once a year to keep it functional

Caps don't go bad, they just discharge past safe limits and need to be brought back up slowly. Just plugging it in can make them pop. I have a friend that works on industrial electrical shit for a living and can recharge the caps for me if I ever let one get to that point.

Well I did as everyone says not to and got a cheap 110v vfd. It's working and variable speed and fwd/rev is cool too. We shall see how long it lasts.

Does a reverse sander put material back on? Cause that would be handy once in a while.
