I'll try to be as precise as possible.

Out wheeling the other day. Truck started intermittingly missing/sputtering. Shut it off and won't start again although intermittingly it will try to fire but would sputter and die.
Towed it home bla bla.

Things I have tried so far. I also have an 88 pickup that I can swap parts off of.
Swapped MAF with no change.
Swapped ECU with no change.
Installed new fuel pump.
Changed fuel filter.
Checked for spark, it does have spark.
Swapped TPS from 88 no change.
Jumper wired the check plug, blinks 7 times indicating TPS.
Cracked the cold start injector, sprays gas everywhere.
Put a noid on injector, only lights up if it actually starts but runs super rough then dies.
Checked cap and rotor, looked fine.

At a loss here and got a Fordyce trip coming up.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Make sure the fuel pump comes on when the AFM door is moved, make sure door moves smoothly, check all fuses with a meter, corroded ground on the intake? Is the big flat head mixture screw still in the top of the throttle body? Bud of mine had that somehow fall out and the truck was NOT happy and never ran until it was replaced.

Check the engine harness where it runs through the intake manifold. Sometimes it can rub through the tape and make weird things happen...

Longshot but, Eng. Temp sensor?
Check the tiny spring loaded terminal ends inside the afm plug.
Along with the male pins on the afm

Wash em out with deoxit and rebend them to hold tight, then slather with non corrosion grease .

Might be hitting fordyce next week myself.

What year is the original truck? They had 3 different generations of 22re's. Possibly the fuel pressure regulator?

When setting the TPS it needs to be dialed in prefect via the fsm directions.

The truck is an 85 although I swapped an 88 cab on it. The engine came out of a 2wd 3rd gen but I kept all the 85 intake, wiring etc.

I ordered a fuel pressure gauge kit which will be here tomorrow..

Got a buddy coming over tonight, will continue to look at all wiring.

The check engine light still blinks 7 times indicating a tps. Is there a way to clear the codes and start over? I tried unhooking the battery and still blinks the same code. I guess I'll have to delve into how to calibrate the tps.

Shouldn't it run with the tps unplugged, sort of like a limp mode?

From alldata, hope this helps. Sorry for the shitty photos.

UPDATE

Long story short it turned out to be the coil/igniter. Swapped the one from my 88 and it fired up like a boss.

Not sure if it was actually the coil or igniter, I will figure that out later.

Time to get ready for Fordyce:smokin:

congrats on the repair, hope it survived fordyce!

for the record, those factory ex53 ignitors on the 85'-86'-?? 22re's are getting hard to find, and they quit making the aftermarket versions during covid, but fwiw here is the parts cross-reference: Igniter part number for a 1985 T4R 22re motor - YotaTech Forums

if the dealer can find stock, it used to be $400

Dont remeber where i seen but wasnt there a way to wire a Gm hei control module to replace the ignitors. I can totaly be mistaken though

It’s possible but those things are far from reliable. They are known to fail.

i think that people were doing that on the carbed 22r engines?

I believe the 22RE needs a factory if it or since it has an IGT and IGF signal loop which requires a factory ignitor.

The 22R is carb and won't care what is making the spark happen.

GM HEI is pretty good. Biggest issue is cheap junk and people not bonding the ignitor to the distributor for heat removal which will smoke any of them.

Ive never had many issues with the GM module, and proly had 30+ vehicles over years with an HEI.
