Like the title says, has anybody driven anything that was skid steer at or above 20 mph? I’m expecting my Vulcan project to go that fast and more and wondering if that really isn’t possible unless I’m in an open field. The only thing I’ve ever driven with skid steer is my excavator. (Maybe 4 mph) I know a guy that was good with a skidsteer loader, but I don’t think it went any more than 10-15 mph. I rode in a snow machine groomer that might have gone that fast, but it wasn’t a real accurate affair.

I know Panzer has that car with tracks and skis, but I think he just steers conventionally with the skis. Even if he is doing differential braking, I think the skis would help it drive better.

Let’s hear it, how was it? I’m probably a week away from testing. Do I need to have extra underware on hand?

Every skid steer I have seen has zero suspension and solid tires
No way in hell I want to go that fast
Trackless MT has no suspension and skid steer tires. They do about 25, some closer to 30

If you can get fine enough speed control on each side you may be okay. You'll need to lock-out the ability to stop or even reverse one side without significant operator input.

Think about a tank rather than a skid-steer loader.

My Argo does about 20mph pinned out and it is ok at that speed on a dirt road. On a dirt track with bumps and dips? Hell no! It's all fine when you have a good stretch that is smooth and you get up to speed but then you hit that dip and instantly regret getting up to that speed

:lmao:

Closest thing would be a Deere 8RT and they can go 24 mph. They use electronics and a steering wheel tho
My first time in a tracked deere (8420T or similar) it was so damn weird to use a steering wheel.

And it's funky to drive for a guy with years in dozers.

OP:
An M88A2 can do 18 or 20mph while towing another tank.

So your sketch 8wd thing should be fine at 20, it has suspension and isn't towing (yet). I would want to do it off pavement first so if you aren't smooth with the hydrostat controls it won't buck you out.

I'd think the skid steering 8x8 probably is less sketchy than one of my rear steer wheel loaders at 20mph. I think it will be fine as long as you get the hydro controls dialed in.

Like said above, an Argo will do 20-25 if you can hang on. It's not feasible on a bumpy road if you're not already on the kidney transplant list. Steering input is little-little-little-ALLTHEFUCKINWAY at speed. Touchy as shit.

The A3 is supposed to do 45 mph in reverse

Tanks go fast. ??
I swore to god a1 abrams were 60mph but looking them up it says 45.

Others....

The more I see that Rip Saw thing, the more disappointed I am with it
rolling coal across a field, wow
Cleetus showed the lame drive system in one of his videos, it is neat I guess but what do you do with it ?

Exactly why Cleetus got a deal on his from heavy d, and why he sold it after he couldn't think of any more content to make with it.

They're cool as hell in theory. But useless because there's nowhere cool to drive them besides the dunes.

My Argo does 35mph and it's horrifying.

Because of the steering or the lack of suspension?

Sounds like suspension. How do you feel about steering?

That sounds like a French tank.

I think the suspension is good on the Vulcan, but I won’t really know till I drive it. Assuming it is, I would think it should drive similar to an Argo on smooth road. Question, does the Argo steer by differential braking or is there some kind of power splitting transmission?

I kind of hate to mention this on this site, but here goes. I won’t have any seat belts for the first test. In fact, I won’t have any seats. I will be standing next to it or sitting on the fender or roof. I made a wired remote control for it.

The pumps are controlled by the two toggle switches. The green button must be held in or it shuts down. That way if I fall off or something, at least the thing doesn’t keep going. Controlling the pumps will only allow a top speed of maybe 8 mph, so I don’t think there will be any “U-Tube” moments. The real speed will come with controlling the wheel motors.
