1st Build Thread Attempt - Cheap Suzi

Cool build. Cool sami. Cool shop - what size is it?

I got my AN fittings from speedway. But like mentioned before, call summit or Jegs.
Thank you sir!

My building is 40x80, but my work shop is 40x50. I've got a dividing wall between the shop and a 30x40 storage area.

Went to the Badlands Park in Indiana over Memorial weekend. It's the first big trip I've taken the Sami on and it worked great. Some of the climbs were sketchy with the short wheelbase but it was perfect for all the rest of the trails.

I've always been a welded front diff guy, but my first run this weekend with the Grizzly front has changed my mind. Wouldn't ever go back to a welded front in something like this again. It steered so much better!

I'm just going to dump some photos. Nothing real exciting.

I started the install of the TC power steering pump last night.

Tonight I'll mount the reservoir and hopefully mount the cooler.

Turns out you certainly can run a V belt using the Low Range TC mount, even though they advise you not to.

I'll post pictures once I'm done.

Not done, but the cooler is mounted as well as the fluid reservoir.

The cooler is mounted to the radiator to frame bracket. I will have to move the overflow bottle to the passenger side of the radiator, but I drilled out the spot welds on the little mounting bracket and will weld it to the passenger side radiator bracket.

Still have to pick up a belt and some 5/8 hose to go from the reservoir to the pump. My only fear at this point is if the fluid reservoir outlet is lower than the pump inlet. I haven't measured yet but it seems close.

The cooler is 1/4 the size of the radiator! 😂

Buttoned it up, with the exception of some heat sleeve to put on the reservoir to pump hose.

Final results, feels more consistent than the old Toyota 22r pump. It's definitely quieter and doesn't seem like it's being overworked like the Toyota pump was. I would bet this equates to cooler temps, especially with the new cooler.

I also included a picture of the v belt I used, in case anyone ends up down this road. Low Range advises that a serpentine belt must be used with their bracket, but thats not the case. I'm running a Low Range dual v belt balancer, Summit 340-204 power steering pump pulley, and the pictured belt. It might not hurt to go one small step shorter on the belt; mine has plenty of tension but I'm at the very end of the adjustment on the pump.

Any chance you have some info, maybe a part #, for the subaru master cylinder you are using? Are you using the stock booster?

The build continues..

I'm liking that off-white color. Anything special or just spray bomb?

Nice build, looks good :smokin:.

Trans input bearing left the chat..

Also, on a ban from FB for saying tranny. :homer:

Everything is torn down and cases cleaned, waiting on the rebuild kit to come.

Big thanks to Austin and the parts counter, I saved almost $100 IIRC on the TG rebuild kit through the counter vs the TG website.

Went wheeling the other weekend, ripped the flares off the front and had to cut fenders and move the flares up. Just been driving it all over pretty much every other day.

Seeing threads like this makes me miss having a sammy so bad. I've had 5 of them (3 vert and 2 tin top) and still can't decide if I want the next one to be a tin top or vert but at price people are asking for one I might have a long time to make up my mind lol.
I didn't want to bump thread again just for this but I was thinking about it today and my memory must be really slipping here. So I have had 6 samurais lol, 3 of each. I forgot about one I had for about a week because it threw a rod through the block about 1 mile away from home on a 350mi trip home from buying it and that was only time I got to drive it.

You aren't wrong, people are asking crack high prices for rusted out units in my area.

Bummer! I would really like a bubble top for a daily commeter. It would need a RHD and TDI swap though.

I’m trying to find a rust free 2WD Kick or Track for DD duties. Turn it into an off road vehicle once the snow tracker rots out.

Are you happy with this set up?

If you weren’t keep it street legal would you want it lower and trimmed metal or is the height and short wheel base not an issue?

I am very happy with this setup. It's cheap as hell and works for what I do with it. We have a lot of mud and water mixed in with rocks, so something super low wouldn't work for what I need either.

If I was building a dedicated wheeling rig, I'd probably stretch the back out a ways and get some 38s and start hacking sheet metal.

There's been a couple times where I've wished for more wheel base, but there's been as many times that the short wheel base was helpful in completing an obstacle.

My first samurai was very similar for a while. I spent a lot of time upside down
I was also 17-19 though and didn't know when to stop.

I've wheeled a similar samurai recently and it wasn't bad. I've always had the short rig of the group, and it's not as bad as everyone says as long as you know your limits. For a pure crawler, I'd shoot for a lower ride hieght. Spua with cut out fenders.

Spent last weekend at the Badlands in Indiana for my bachelor party. The liquor called the shots and this thing got the absolute piss pounded out of it. Both front springs are bent bad and there's a good chance the engine is tits up. Was a good time though, would do it again. This is the only pic I have from the weekend. :usa:

First wash after Raptor Liner, not too bad.

I'm at a crossroads with the engine, I have options in my shop but they are not what I originally wanted to do (1.6)

So the 1.3 is rattling...I could rebuild it, but it's still a 1.3. It never impressed me, it worked, it did everything (wheeling and DD) but didn't do anything well at all.

I just rebuilt the stock 5 speed trans, the t case has 6.4 gears in a ZOR cradle. I have already broke the t case once, and trust it about as much as I trust this president.

I have in my possession a TBI 4.3 that was a reman engine. I've had it for a long time, it was supposedly good when I got it but I've never run it. I have that mated to a Toyota W56 5 speed with stock dual cases behind it. I was going to run this in my Yota truggy, but changed my mind to a 5.3

I have everything to run the 4.3/Yota combination. I know the Toyota trans and cases will take anything I'd dish out in the Samurai. It'd make daily driving easier I'd think.

Or do I find a 1.6? I've been looking for anything used on Marketplace and haven't had any luck.

What would IBB do?

Since you have it all why not.

BUT it's getting long, I know it could fit but it's tight and rear driveshaft starts getting real short, front starts getting real long.

When you say stock dual cases, do you mean stock 2.28's in both? If so I'd sell the doubler and put money towards 4.7 gear set and just run one case. Would give you a good amount more room to play with for driveshafts and motor placement.

Also, did you break the tcase with the cradle or before you had the cradle?

I really like this zuk a lot, nice job!
