What's new

1991 Snow Tracker Build

New head I linked was like $400, I'd rather do that than fidle fuck with a machine shop and waiting. Just r&r the same day.

Buuut, that can cause issues with bottom ends. I've seen it and someone else verified it. All that new found compression on a 200-300k mile bottom end isn't good.

My engine has 300k miles on it

It runs a milled down head with freshy cut valves

granted I don't drive it a ton but the driving I do with it it pretty much lives between 3-4k RPMs the whole time

I'm not saying it happens every time, just that it's a possibility.

I was chatting with JR via text and I think I’m going to just order that rebuilt head for $340. I don’t want to be Geo-less in the dead of winter. So I hope they have a good turn around time.

This will give me more time to get that red Geo 16V rebuilt and the harness pulled from the Sidekick for this Geo.

I am pretty surprised about the price of that head.

I had to replace my 8v head and finding one was not easy.

Now is that head in stock? You do see that you send your old head back to them.

Also you have said that the head was new, it is not new it is reconditioned, that is why they need your old one back.

I saw all that. Going to call them tomorrow and get the low down. If they are going to be out for weeks on turn around, I’ll figure out something.

YB4 won’t work.

New plan: pulling the head, and replacing the exhaust valve myself. Dude at work told me an old trick to lap and seat my own valves. Going to give it a try and save some money. Get some experience in doing this work as well.

2 jobs going at one time.

Got the coolant drained and the fan almost off to tackle the head job. Then also working on getting the off road bumper on this.

I’m going to bolt it to the frame with some heavy duty brackets where the front body mount is. Hopefully it holds.

PO also twisted the fair lead pretty badly on this HF winch. Hopefully they sell fair leads. HF is really bad with selling individual pieces for junk they sell.

My guess it’s it’s probably a 6” spread, pick up a hawse fairlead and some synth rope off fleabay. Ta-da.

Thanks, I’ll hunt one down. The synthetic rope would really help lighten the load.

Freaking hacking and coughing today after grinding all night. I need to buy good goggles that don’t fog up.

It is a common bolt pattern and spread. I mangled the one on mine trying to carry half of SXS with a missing tire/wheel/suspension. My dad had a 5 gallon bucket with old roller fairleads from converting stuff to hawse/synthetic rope. Not sure what brand I grabbed but it bolted right on

For $30-40 for the fair lead and rope it’s a lot like a sore peter, can’t beat it.

Side note/thread jack got the news I’ll be at Hammers with Maxxis. :smokin:

That’s awesome!

Definitely a bucket list trip. Can’t find anyone who wants to make the drive out with me.

This will be my 5th year out with Maxxis, met JR4X out there 2 years ago completely randomly. My 2 friends and I were eyeballing his badass 4 door Tracker and joking about how we all thought it was cool as shit, meanwhile we all have fully built crawlers back home and were surrounded by Ultra4 cars. :lmao:

Let me know man, I wanted to haul the crawler out this year, it just wasn’t in the cards, starting a business took up all my extra loot. Next year I’d really like to make it happen.

I sold back most of my PTO in anticipation of being fired, but if I’m still working next year might be a possibility. For sure.

Never been further west than Colorado or eastern Wyoming, so would like to see what’s beyond. And of course, Ultra4 cars in person. :smokin:

KOH can’t be explained, it has to be experienced.
Yup. This coming one will be my 11th one in a row. If everything goes right this year the tracker won’t be joining me. I rolled my crawler on back door during the Thursday night party last time it went and it’s been on jack stands ever since. On your advice I put an eBay aluminum radiator and the factory style fan & shroud back on it. Much better than what I was shooting for. Going to do lots of trail stuff and just stay away from Back Door and full of love with it.

I finally got into this job.

First I got the bumper all mounted up, which makes a great tool bench.

Then I started into getting the head off. Finding those bottom intake bolts in this greasy, shitty mess was a pain in the ass. I took off way more than needed, but the radiator and grill being out will make doing the crank seal easier.

Also, I see guys like Rattle Snake and they have such clean shops when working. Mine looks like a damn tornado has torn through. I kept telling myself to clean up everything before tackling the other work...that didn’t happen. :flipoff2:

Valve is smoked. Pistons look good.

The PO kept soaking this thing in WD-40 for 7 years. I could kick his balls in.

That valve is impressively burnt. I hope the seat is solid enough that a new valve will lap in and seal to it.

I think I know an engine builder who could put a new seat in if needed. He said he’s not taking any more engine rebuilds until 2023, but said he can do quick machine work.

You guys ever forget to do something and just say, “Fawk I hope it doesn’t leak!”

Forgot to put goop on the block side when I did the water pump. The previous pump only had a gasket so it should be fine.

Wired the winch up, too. It’s like the HF stuff was made for the Geo.

Also cleaned up the pistons more. Just need to clean that head gasket crap off.

If the block face was clean that pump should seal fine. Looks shiny and nice. With a head that all the valves seal it should be a good motor

This really has me thinking about doing a leak down/comp test on my buddies 8v. Like I’ve said before his is an absolute one fuck dog compared to my 16v. The 16v with a manual is like a V8 compared to his auto 8v.

That’s how I feel about every 16V I’ve had compared to every 8V I’ve had. Maybe all 8V’s except for the one YotaAtieToo has/had only run on 3 cylinders.

Can of worms man. I’m into it deeper than I wanted.
