1991 Snow Tracker Build

Snow Tracker finally has power steering. Still have to cut off the coolant over flow bottle and relocate it, but it works in the mean time with a cheap bracket fix.

Can definitely see why these can use coolers.

Anyone know if I can pull the steering wheel and re-center it, because I got it off center by a decent amount. Taking it to the shop tomorrow so I can align it, but not sure there’s enough to straighten the steering wheel.

Does it steer equal distance left and right? That would be my only worry that the box wasn’t “centered” otherwise hillbilly alignment by popping the wheel off seems a-ok.

What part of PA you from? We usually do a Tracker weekend once in a while in Wellsville OH. Usually 3-4 of us.

It’s centered almost perfectly. The gear had like 3.93 turns so it was easy to center.

I’m in western PA, real close to Wellsville. :smokin:

Any idea why this is clicking? Just swapped the clutch cable, and now 2 and 3 are grinding and having trouble getting it into reverse. Can you adjust this too tight?

Hate to say it, you may have a throw out bearing issue. Might explain all the trouble with the cables and the hard shifting. It is a PITA to get the clutch cable adjusted right. If you don’t pull the clutch arm far enough obviously you can’t shift. If you pull it to far you can’t shift it either.

I’m guessing it’s adjusted too tightly. I’m going to measure the play when I get a chance. Suzuki forum online said it needs to be about an inch.

Really don’t want to do a clutch job right now so hopefully that’s the issue.

Tried aligning this at the shop this week. Steering was junk so ordered all new stuff. Got an oil pan gasket coming so I can drop and seal up the front axle assembly, and finally seal up my oil pain.

Then on to possibly dropping the trans, rebuilding the trans, re-gearing the t-case, and installing a heavier duty clutch.

The clutch in mine is funky, really light and engages with hardly any pedal travel.
I’m going to try and get this cable fine tuned. Just need a helper to depress the clutch while I measure and adjust it.

Man a set of case gears would be sweet, I can’t justify the money for them for a rig I only get out in a handful of times. Be glad you have the manual, my one buddy has an 8v auto and it is a dog.

They definitely are, they only saving grace is at least you can jump to 5.xx gears for a little bump, with the 5spd, you're already at 5.12, so even aftermarket 5.38s aren't worth the money.

I just hate slamming it over obstacles.

My ultimate plan is that all the stuff I throw into this will get taken off, the Geo hacked up and scraped and all the good stuff will go into another build.

No way man scraping over stuff is the best part of these things. Couple street signs makes a good flat belly then she’ll just slide over it all.

Had my oldest kid work the clutch while I measured. Have exactly 1” of travel. Every gear is fine except second. If I shift fast and hard it’s not terrible, but I can still feel it catching in the shifter. At lower RPM’s it is like butter. The higher RPM’s you have to shift it like a Fast and Furious movie.

Found a potential back up transmission locally for $175. Going to grab it up, just in case.

The synchros for these are like $250!

It's a suzuki, when would you ever not be bang shifting it. :homer:

I get it, but there’s a bad grinding in 2nd gear.

But, I stopped by a yard today and got a transmission and transfer case for $185. :smokin:

Cheaper than buying synchros.

I wasn't totally serious :flipoff2:

Have you checked the fluid? My zf5 like wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd when I got it at ~200k miles. I put gm syncromesh fluid in it, per a mechanic buddies recommendation. It has never done it again, and I'm at 340k.

Hopefully the donor is actually in better shape.

I’m running Amsoil GL4 in it right now. It’s clean, other than some metal in it.

I could try Synchromesh (Royal Purple, right).

Which is a gear oil? It seems the transmissions like lighter fluid?

It wasn't royal purple, it's been almost 10 years but I think it was just ac Delco? That's what I found on google and it looked familiar.

Looks like amsoil makes a version of it.

It's ome of those things, I would never had believed if I didn't do it myself. I thought the 2nd gear synchro was toast and it's been perfect since.

Maybe I’ll give this a try.

At least I have a back up transmission and transfer case.

I wiped out the synchro’s for 3rd in a samurai letting the stupid clutch cable get out of adjustment. Did the same as you, put good manual trans fluid and that got me by. Then I changed the trans when I had to replace the adapter bolts for the petroworks 16V swap.

Tonight I took off those garbage stripes and added the Irate sticker. Then tackled the interior. I’ve put off painting the floor for way too long. Better late than never, I guess.
