1991 Snow Tracker Build

You dragging diffs at Wellsville?

I explained to my buddy last night about trails and how to keep them from getting shut down and how we would have to approach the state in making more trails. Basically I told him a built full-size rig usualy just crawls through trails slowly. Yes, they will eventually cause ruts from wet seasons and they’ll eventually cause erosion. However, sport machines with idiots blipping the throttle over every obstacle, around every turn, up hills, etc. makes it happen FAST.

The trails have gotten so bad in one year that it’s unreal. To the point I’m trying to bite my sidewall into dirt to keep from getting hung up everywhere.

As for the spot, it’s just a local area. Very nice scenery, but nothing worth towing to ride. Very easy stuff for the most part.

EDIT: If I can make something happen from another member here, I might actually build a rock section on my property to play on. I only have 20 acres, but I have so many giant rocks it can be a fun little test area. Could even be used to help my buddies learn to approach rocks better.

How long has it been since you’ve been there?

Scooby is a ghost town, pretty much unclimbable, Killer bypass is getting almost impassable if it’s wet. It’s crazy how much it’s changed and how quick.

Like you said jackasses constantly spinning the tires so they can hear their eBay blow offs.

I’ve never been to Wellsville. Ever.

I would for sure like to hit it once.

I have used this rock in my backyard for pretty much all of my testing. I have never gotten a full-size actual vehicle on top (the SXS went up it when it was NARROW).

Today I finally got the right line to get on top of it. Crawling over shit like this definitely takes practice.

Then I got down and ghetto hacked my fenders all up. Tired of the constant rubbing.

My oldest was just holding the brake and making sure it didn’t slip into gear.

Got out wheeling last night. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to need to go bigger soon. These sport machines are leaving ruts I can’t get through, because I don’t have IRS, so I’m dragging my diff.

Why not build it bigger, right? :flipoff2:

Had one trail repair last night. Crawled up a creek bed and over stretched my clutch cable. Also time for 4.24 transfer case gears. Stock gearing sucks.

Just get another front frame section and swap it to IRS. The shafts might not like it though.

I actually have another frame…

But I don’t like that idea. :flipoff2:

Debating on Toyota axles (member has a set for sale here) and 35’s, or the Altered Ego 4.5” kit and 33’s.

Benefits to both. The SAS swap is double the cost, but can net 2-4 inch bigger tires. Altered Ego maintains the comfy IFS ride with more flex, and I can squeeze 33’s under my cut fenders.

4.24 gears also limit my crawl…which would be better with 33’s.

Fawk, I don’t know.

This one is for sale locally. 3rz Toyota axles and drive train with duals... Tempting but $$

Definitely not a Toyota axle.

Bigger tires and an offset rear diff would be a big improvement if ruts is the biggest issue.

Although if the center part of the ruts is wide and flat, it may not help much.

And that’s what they are, wide and flat.

33’s should be fine locally. Most of the SXS’s are running 30’s here, but the IFS/IRS helps their clearance.

My draw of the Track/Kicks is keeping them stockish, sure you can’t do every trail but it’s always fun whee when you can driver mod the shit out of a trail it shouldn’t be able to do.

When you start getting into SAS swaps to run 33s that’s spending some money to be on basically the same level as what I’d call an entry level Cherokee.

That is true. However, in my situation a Track/Kick/Sami and maybe a TJ are the best things for our trails. There’s places where my Geo just squeezes by now between trees or around turns. The rear spool has actually made it even harder to navigate.

But, as I’m building this, all the local mayors and politicians are doing studies and whatnot on the “Rails to Trails” system. So we may end up losing pretty much all of our riding as the rail bed is a huge connector between them all.

Fawkin’ hikers and bikers. :flipoff:

Had the Tracker out this weekend again. I either need to swap in the 3 speed I have or re-gear this t-case. Crawling with stock gears and a manual sucks.

After our trip this fall I might also set aside money and just build this bigger with the Altered Ego kit and 33’s. Finding a cheap Sami for a build is not easy.

Looks like a sweet spot.

I have no issues with my manual, sure it could stand to be geared lower but mine will lug considerably whereas my friends autos just bog and slip the converter.

That and I use my e brake as my 3rd foot a lot. Hold, rev and let out clutch and release e brake.

My e-brake doesn’t work. :flipoff2:

I think I need to just build a skid and beat the piss out of this. I did all that engine work and now I’m babying it.

I might also need a new clutch. Pretty sure it’s well glazed after teaching my wife and oldest kid to drive it.
Where is this?

West Freedom. Not very cool, but you can come ride a weekend if you want.

Looks like a fun time. I'm guessing your kinda at the point where you either dump more money in and go bigger or refine what you have to work better. I know there are options for gearing like doubler or the harder to find gears for axles.

Skid plate the whole bottom with lighter metal and hdpe over top?

Maybe just metal. I drag so much. If an edge of the HDPE gets caught it will probably peel it off.

These trails are getting squared tops between the ruts. There’s roots and rocks sticking up everywhere.

AE Kit, new tires, and lower t-case gears is about $3,750. Right now.

JR4X said the Altered Ego is great. Not only that but any parts I put on this will come off for another build.

Fix the e brake. Also build a skid and some rocker protection. I’m the only one in my group that doesn’t have a belly skid, everyone else just turtle slides over stuff I get hung up on.

I ran the 3spd auto with a stock case and the 4.16 samurai case. The stock case was not near low enough for anything and the 4.16 was OK, but felt it lacked get up and go for bumping stuff. This was 32s and a bigger 4 door, but also the 2.0.

The 4.24 and 5 spd will be MUCH better and is an easy install.

What gauge steel did your buddies use? 3/16 too light?

Good to know. Think it’ll still be fine with 33’s? I ran it through the calculator and it’s like 79.xx final crawl ratio, which is way better than my current set up and like 33 and change.

33’s and…34’s.

I had the tape out this morning before leaving for work. Starting to think Altered Ego A arms and a grinder can fit 33’s…

Ah, I’ve already hacked up the rear. I was trying to avoid anymore lift and just chop up metal. Looks like it might not be a good idea.

Stole some pics off fb from his recent trip to slick rock. Maybe the rubbing in the back isnt to much of an issue and the roundy edge of the fenders does a good enough job.

These are 33x12.50s on 15x10s with 2" back spacing
