1989 Jeep Cherokee 1 ton swap

HOLY SHIT this thing is too nice for my Jeep.

Neutral safety switch cleaning. Pulled this off the transmission sitting in the floor in my garage. Ideally this will fix my lack of overdrive. I’m not expecting it to. It was easy to do with the transmission on the floor though.

I sprayed a rag with some starter fluid, and used some 1500 grit sand paper on the contact points. I also wiped as much dirt out of anywhere I could find it. I also removed the tiny springs under the two small notched pieces n the shift arm. All this is covered in a BleepinJeep video.

Is your trans kick down cable set properly?
I don't know. I haven't checked. It might not be and I'll have to figure out how to set it. There is A HIGH possibility it is set wrong, and the transmission thinks whatever it thinks when the kick down cable isn't doing it's job.

It takes two seconds, worth checking. Press in the tab on the cable at the intake, making sure the cable pushes all the way back in - help it by hand if you need to. Then walk over and just push the throttle pedal all the way to the ground.

Done.

It takes two seconds once I find a friend to sit in the driver seat and hit the throttle. you think I have friends who want to come over and help me at 4am to do Jeep stuff? :lmao:

Tried the throttle cable thing.
65 mph on the dash.
2,950 rpm.

Edit: also wanted to idle at 1,750 until I slapped the throttle and kicked it down to roughly 1,300.

I did a thing at pick n pull yesterday. Tore apart three transfer cases to get upgrades, and cut a broken case in half to get the sun gear. Max upgrades in the 231 when I pull it. 6 gear planetary to accompany the wide chain and slip yoke.
Crawl box/doubler will get a 6 gear planatery too.

Close up of the gear cut of the older style planetary.

Input measurements because there are three lengths and two or three bearing sizes across a few NP23x/24x cases.

Let the party begin…
On the left is a 23 spline inout and planetary from a 1991 Cherokee 231j I pulled first.
On the left is the 6 gear I pulled from a 93 241C from a 1993 chevy. I’m swapping the input from the Chevy 27 spline to the jeep 23 spline.

What I paid. I harvested another 6 gear from a broken 241 and it’s in the green bag. I chucked the broken half over the fence and grabbed it. I’m sure they would have let me take it free.

Initial cuts. A 6” cutoff wheel works GREAT for this.

I made sure to take out the snap ring before doing any of this. Also knocked out the front bearing and left it in a safe space.

Here is my final pick n pull hail. Some extra bearings, snap rings, and a planetary people sell for $150-300 depending on where you shop. The Pirate 4x4 story of telling pick n pull what it is and them having no clue is correct. I even offered to let him search my tool bag and he said ‘nah you’re good.’ I’d been there 5.5 hours.

This cup was filled with booze so I emptied it and took it home. I also acquired a 1/2 Craftsman breaker bar.

Bump stops compliments of FordFascist. He donated the parts, drilled the holes, told me what to buy, and made pretty much all of the cuts. I did the welding. :flipoff2:

I did the (so far) hard part of the doubler.
Pressed in the sun gear and input bearing. Hopefully I put it in the correct way because this WILL NOT come out.

Edit: I think the video means I put the gear in correctly.

Nice, do you have a press or did your jerry rig something?

Looks like you did it the right way, from my reading there’s a slight notch on one side and that goes down so that any aluminum shavings from pressing have somewhere to hide. Otherwise the non notched side will hang up and not let it press all the way.

20 ton harbor freight press. Bought it as a gift, along with a few other things, for my step dad because I don’t have somewhere to store it.
yeah there is a note, and I made sure to read the instructions a few times before forgetting to look them up officially when I was pressing the gear in. I used one of the press plates to TRY and press it in square and I still ended up rotating it a lot to make sure it went in square. When it got deep enough I removed the press plate, numbered the bolt holes, and did a star pattern.
the bearing went in pretty easy and I tried not to force it with Hulk strength on the press. Firmly snug is what I’d say I went to. I have a really good ability to use too many tons of force on things. I probably could have made the non-notched side fit in there.

Yeah dude get some!

You are making good progress. Looking forward to this going together.

THANKS!!!!
Too bad I lost a bolt for my bump stops in the rear.:lmao:

After, I should work on the E-brake cable I have flopping around, extend the exhaust to go out the rear (either flip the muffler or fabricobble exhaust) and get off my ass about the hydro assist I have sitting on a shelf.

I was deathly afraid of fucking up the billet case.

Your video doesn’t look right. The planetary should not sit up that high. The planetary gear should drop down another 1/2” or so into the case. The gears should mesh perfectly.

To keep with the mullet meth head cherokee theme I am attaching photos of an add a leaf I did.
I had to cut off the Rough Country leaf spring pin and retainer, painted it to ‘color match’ the jeep because Cherokee people are weird, and bought some new retainers because Procomp and 4WP failed to inform me they were not included. Thankfully using the Big Azz Tong and Groove pliers made bending the tabs slightly easier.
I painted the leaf spring perch this time on one side. The side in the photo is the one I stripped out so trying to line up the bolt and nut took longer than im willing to admit. I almost hit a point of taking the grinder to it and adding a new one.

Eco box stuff.
23 spline I put from the early 90s Cherokee NP231 with the 6 gear planetary from the early 90 NP241C.
DC3CF227-CCEA-42DE-A1A3-8408140273F5.jpeg

Input bearing retainer from a 231/241 I picked up at Pick N Pull. ‘Thin’ coat of RTV. There was more before I remembered how much it sucked removing this and pushed harder to thin it out more.
As a reference, the indention on the right goes to the RIGHT of the word ECO on the box.

hey look at that, using the bolts included with the $1,200 kit works better.
