What's new

1972 Ford F250 CrewCab

I really think to get better mpg your going to be looking for a trans with OD, maybe a ZF5 swap or even a 4r100 if wanted to stay auto. Even with smaller tires the OD would keep rpms down lower @70 than what your currently turning.

Edit: might be ahead money wise after selling the splitter and current setup to then just swap in newer drivetrain at same time as axle swap.
Eh, I like the idea of the splitter. That and it keeps most people who are going to steel the truck confused with three peddals and two main stick shifts, not including the three for the transfercases. So there is that.

Cool truck
Thanks! It's a work in progress, but it's getting there.
IMO, Unless you do mostly highway miles at constant speed an OD trans won't help fuel usage. Height, big tires and weight are the issues.

I get 5 mpg, or 1 mile per $. so 7.5 is pretty good :laughing:
Yeah, I'm not going to expect anything good. I know when I get a new engine, I'll most likely be going with a 408 stroker and a low end torque cam that will make the mpg even worse. especially since I know I'll enjoy the sounds it makes when I step on it. And I'll probably end up going efi with all the change in elevation here in NM.

=====================================

I went and looked at the rear brakes this weekend. When I took the passenger side drum off, it was basically new in there. The rear brakes just needed to be adjusted correctly. They were pretty much barely touching when the brake peddal was mashed all the way in. After adjusting them correctly, the e-brake finally works and the brake pedal is much stronger. So that's a good thing. I now have a complete rebuild kit for the rear drums when I forget to release the e-brake next time. HA! Well, except for the drums, but I'm sure those arn't difficult to replace. A lot easier than the rotors. Now on to tightening the AC line behind the glovebox and re-routing the fuel line away from the engine to make sure I'm not vaporizing the fuel as it tries to go to the carb.

I'd like to point out that with OD you'll at least be able to go with lower gearing; probably won't nudge the MPG but will help things move along off the line and keep you from winding the motor up on the highway of course.

I'd like to do the Gear Vendors in my truck but short wheelbase might not leave me with much of a driveshaft if I put in a doubler (I'd have to look into it).

Yup... that's why I want the torque splitter. so I can go to 5.38 gears on it. I'll also add a doubler before the NP205 I have for it. Should be a good walk along after they're all installed.

====================================

Got a bit more done today on the truck. I ended up purging the power steering / hydro-assist. The power steering reservoir was a bit low after swapping the end of the line to get it out of the way of the pitman arm.

I was able to fix the leak in my A/C line. The O-ring was destroyed. Probably didn't have enough oil on it. After getting the new one installed, and the A/C system filled up, there was only two drops that leaked out. I'm guessing those were from the previous time as they came from where a fan was. I'll watch it for a bit, but at least the A/C is now blowing really cold.

I installed the other two window crank handles, so now all 4 are there.

Next is to figure out the fuel line to get it away from the engine. I want to make sure it's not vaporizing the fuel when the engine gets hot. So I'll re-route it up along the cab from the drivers side frame rail and then insulate it some how. That should help keep the fuel from vaporizing.

I also noticed one of the bolts on the colletor off the passenger exhaust maniforld was missing. I fixed that and now the slight exhaust leak is now gone.

After that I checked all the fluids and topped off the ones that needed. So far the oil and transmission fluid were all good. So now, I gotta go and fill the gas tank up now and see how it drives again. I'm sure it's still just as fun to drive as it was before.

Not really... I've been slowly working on my other truck and have also been playing with my other toys that go bang. Wife has also been making plans during the weekend so I haven't really had too much time dedicated to getting these things up and running again.

However, I do hope to get to it this weekend as I want to drive it up to Cars and Coffee just to see some reactions on it vs the cars that show up.

Well, I got the fuel line re-routed and insulated with reflective kevlar sheath. Should be good to keep fuel from vaporizing within the fuel line. I also fixed my gauges as I had a blown fuse and my volt meter and tachometer stopped working until I found the fuse that was blown. I missed it the first time I went through them . At least I know which one it is now for next time.

Went a got gas and it drove just fine. It's not nearly as hot as it was last summer, so hopefully it'll drive like a dream now. I hope to try and take it to cars and coffee tomorrow morning. We'll see if I wake up in time.

Now I just need to drive it a bit and work out some more kinks in it. Then I gotta decide on the suspension and whether I just re-do the bushings and swap down to 37 or 35" tires as these 40's just kill the mpg's and power. If I go with 35's I'll proabably also remove the huge 6" lift and just have a 2" lift on it. It'll still look good with the 35's, but I'll get quite a bit more power back and have better feel on the suspension. Then I'm sure I"ll get at least 10-11 mpg's as well which would be nice. We'll see...

have my other restomod that I need to get working on as I want the frame completely done by Christmas. Then it's working on bodywork and paint, which I might just pay someone to do as I'm tired of doing bodywork. I also gotta figure out what transmission I'm going to put in it. Not sure if Auto or Manual. decisions, decisions.

I was able to take the truck to Cars and Coffee. It made it just fine. I got several glares and stares as I drove in to park it, but there were some people who enjoyed it. Driving in down town Santa Fe I had one woman staring and mouthing WTF. I just laughed as I emitted more CO2 from the exhaust pipes.

I drove with the A/C on for a bit and it seemed to do well. The Thermostat is working well as when the electric fans kick on it has a drag on the engine. My guess is that it's the Alt. pulling more amps and adding more pull on the engine. The A/C compressor doesn't seem to really drag on the engine much more when it kicks on either.

I did notice I have a clunk while turning right. I'm not sure what it is. I'll need to jack it up and see what it may be. I'm going to guess that it's the bushings where the leaf spring perches meet up that are crusty and need replacing. I need to get some of the high lift jack stands in order to replace all of them. I'm also leaning towards dropping the truck 2" as I don't really like the 6" of lift this thing has. I also may go down to 35" tires from these 40's as it'll help with getting some power and mpg's back. And the Wife will like that she can get in the truck as well. All in due time I guess.

That truck would look good on just about any tire so if 35s with 2" works better for your use go for it man. You thinking of keeping the newer style rims or going to something bit more retro?

I'd actually mover over to Methods most likely. The current rims came with the truck so I'd probably look at off-loading em at the same time as the 40's. I'm still not sure what I'll do yet. I have too many projects/toys to play with right now. HA!
