What's new

1968 Ford F-250 Prerunner Build

OK got the radius arms all welded up, Also started welding on the passenger side beam a bit. Gusseted the one point where radius arm meets the beams, which will get weld washers to make it doubled 3/16" thick. Once the radius arms are cooled down I will weld the outer radius arm mounting tabs onto the beams since if they would warp any the bolts would be impossible to install. Also drilled out the drain holes after welding the inside of the shock pocket fully as well.

As someone who's cut up a decent number of old boat trailers I feel very confident saying that the best drain hole is a fully welded assembly that nothing can get into in the first place.

Yeah I agree as well BUT there has to be a pocket on some kind for the coilover eyelet to fit down into so a drain hole is necessary but I can always use my shop vac to clean out any dirt when working on it as well.

Also any guesses how much that beam/radius arm weighs in at without uniball or heim? The beam is 1.75" x .120 Tube with 10ga plate and 3/16" plate at the ends. The radius arm long tube is 2" x .250 DOM and outer kick tube below shock mount is 1.75" x .120 DOM and all the plate on those is 3/16" besides doubler plate for coilover bolt which is 10ga steel. The radius arm tube is 45" long and beam puts track width at 94" wide as well.

was just going to say that! must have 500 lbs of wire on this whole rig when its done. :smokin: looks good man!

Hey Tommy,

Mine were 71ish # ea if I remember correctly.
Im guessing yours are 90+ on the pass side, 110ish for the driver side.

LORDY!

You better put a BIG cell and the batts all the way at the rear.
Looking really good.
Stay with it!

This truck is definetely not gonna be light. Heavy NP205 T-case, Iron Block 6.0L, D70 Rear axle, 40's, this front 4x4 beams, AND a 60 gallon fuel cell which is going behind the axle.

OK so I started welding up some of the backhalf today after making the 4130 tie rods which will get sent off to get heat treated tomorrow and I will get them back in a month of so, when my friend can pick them up for me. Also once welding on the backhalf I capped and gusseted the open tubes from the fuel cell cradle area as well.

Well took the rear end out of the truck today so I can weld up the limit strap tabs, bump pads, and could do weld washers and gusset the lower link mounts as well.

Started to mount the front fiberglass today. Got the door/cab side of the finder mounts tacked in place. Also I am going to do the fiberglass hood on hinges so I can pop the hood to check fluids and such in the desert and not have to lift off the big hood by myself.

Some shitty photos of the work today. I am leaving town tomorrow but on Tuesday I will get the hood opening on these hinges to show that stuff better. Also will need to figure out the lift support mounts and weights as well, so gonna order a few different ones from Mcmaster and go from there.

OK got the rear shock mounts and backhalf finished welded up besides the bottom of the trans cooler tab. Also started welding up the links. Got one lower link all welded up besides the overlay plates and will finish that up tomorrow along with the other lower link. Also I scored a smoking deal on a Variable Speed Bridgeport, Now I just need to get a vise and all the tooling I need again since I sold that stuff with my old mill before I moved from Phoenix and got more for it than this one, which is better condition.

Well got 1 trailing arm fully welded with overlay plates on. Was welding the second trailing arm and ran out of gas, and my extra bottle is empty so won't finish welding this one up until Monday when I can get both my bottles filled.

Yeah but I'd like to see some flux core welds be this strong and look this good.
There's no reason you couldn't make a weld that has all the same critical dimensions using flux core. It's kind of hard to say how it would look since that is really down to the operator. I would probably have stick welded the whole thing.

OK well my dad has been helping me out with body work on the cowl extensions I added to match fenders. I also got everything off the front of the truck and firewall masked so I could apply some coats of steel-it to the cage. I ran out of paint but have more on order to finish spraying it, and I have a spray paint can of it as well to touch up any other spots I couldn't get into with the spray gun and gallon I was using. The cowl will get painted to match the truck so a bit of overspray on that doesn't matter and we have some more sanding and such to do on the cab/doors anyways before primer and paint.

Thanks. I can't wait to finish this thing and actually drive it. My original plan at beginning of this year was to bust ass to try and get it done for KOH but that's not happening, so I am hoping to have it "finished" enough to drive by March. We shall see, lots of work done and still to do.
