1987 v30 SRW…..

The birdcage holding the tapered pinion bearing in the pinion broke and allows the bearings to rub when coasting.

I know the “right” thing to do would be pull everything apart and set everything up again properly.

However, could a guy pull just the pinion out, put new bearings and races and a seal and slap it back in?

Should I try to match the inch pounds of rotation the old unit had? Set it to 15-25 in/pounds per new bearing spec?

The gears have a ton of miles so getting the pattern to line back up might be tricky.

On closer inspection the only real damage was to the straddle bearing and end of the pinion and not the main pinion bearings.

Speedi sleeve or is a rear gear my only option?

Doesn't look even enough for a speedi sleeve. If you can get it machined square then maybe.

I'd say you're in for new gears.

It's a 14 bolt.

Scotch brite this shit and press a new bearing on it.

It'll be fine.
