Took the sti for an early 900 mile oil change (breakin and all) and the paperwork said its 0w20 instead of the 5w30 as it says on the cap and the manual.

I went back and service manager stated it was just a cashier error on paperwork. I advised him I was going to submit for oil analysis and he said no problem, tech has been there for years, and itll come back fine, he refused to redo it.

I just got the blackstone report, and it is indeed 0w20 or 5w20.

That oil was in the engine 900 through 2900 miles.

I am pissed because all they had to do was change it when I called them on it, but they didnt want to.

What would ibb do?

Had them change it on the spot or refuse to pay for improper service.

You already drove it, not the end of the world. It would be worse if it called for 0 and had 5 in it. If you're concerned just get it changed again.

Not going to make a lick of difference to the engine for such a short time period. Full refund and free change to proper weight is in order, then call it a day.

already got it changed the second time.

So nothing to cause eventual early failure of bearings, turbo, etc?

Jfc would losing ten bucks of oil really break them? I'd run my mouth all over FB and such not cause they made a mistake cause the shithead manager lied.

I would change it, and never go back there. I've never paid for an oil change in my life though. Been driving 31 yrs.

Highly unlikely, it's not like you put motor oil where you need gear oil and the weights are way off. Keep in mind that oil changes it's viscosity with temperature, first number is cold, second number is warm...so you had slightly thinner oil at startup, but once it's warmed up a bit it's no worse than the recommended oil when cool. Either way you still have lubrication and the smidge of extra wear you might have had on the bearings and whatnot would amount to driving at most100 miles more in the vehicle (and even that's probably an exaggeration).

nah
turbos prefer thinner oil
every domestic engine going from 30 to 20 in the '90s they never seem to change the bearing clearances

as an aside, everyone gets hung up on the "0W" when 0W (tested at 32F) is still thicker than the 212F SAE40 rating
I'd be running cheap T6 0w40 in everything if I could find it in 5 gallon buckets for the 80 bucks that 5w40 costs

What does the owners manual say about ambient temperature and different grades of oil?

I'd get my oil changed somewhere else next time or do it myself.

wifes got a 2016 forester with 2.5 and i can say the weight is different from the 2.0 turbo. every time i get filter and oil from napa i have to have them check the computer since i ferget what oil it runs and of course im in my truck. got a gallon of oil and a filter fer it fer the next change in the shop but dont feel like trudging threw snow to get to it.

RUGER:usa:

Agree it's very unlikely to hurt the engine. Thinner oil means a thinner oil film and less robust fluid film, but the difference is probably less than what you'd normally get operating the engine in a hot environment. Max load in a hot climate with the wrong oil over a long time might eventually be an issue, but 900 miles is nothing.

I'd be extremely pissed about the wrong oil through - that's stupid simple, and if they can't get that right what else are the fawking up? Further, they refused to believe you and do anything about it. BS.

Not give a fuck because you'll trade it off before the warranty ends.

I took it to the dealer because its the first new vehicle I bought in my life and wanted the maintenance history to be squeaky clean. Serves me right.

Zero difference IMO. My Range Rover calls for 5w20 and Land Rover changed the spec to 0w20 and that’s what I run.

anymore the weight has little to do with the sheer and film. Most all new cars run super light oils and last 2-300k miles with regular changes. Search on bobistheoilguy and say goodbye to hours of time reading. They are the ibb+ of oils.

We used 5w20 in everything that Subaru called for 0w in. The 0w is too thin and burns off, Subaru says burning as much as pint between oil changes and topping off is normal. Doesn't happen with the 5w. It was less hassle for us and less complaining from customers for us to use 5w and put 0w on the paperwork so it didn't come up if there was a warranty issue later. No one wants to hear that it's normal for their brand new car to burn oil.

I want to go back to one of these so I can piss in the radiator and stick whatever will burn in the tank . I dont give a fuck if it takes me 3 months to get across the country.

oh my god how do they ever get away with such heinous crimes as this?

iirc the GM spec was something like a quart every 500 miles

My '02 suburban burns 0 oil.

My '02 suburban burns 0 oil.

that's disappointing

one of my cars burns 4qt every 10k miles, I don't drain it any more
just spun a filter on at 25k cut it open and it looked brand new, next filter is gonna go 30k

I had a 400sb that burned over a gallon a week. I realized this driving to college one day it got loud.

its the opposite - calls for 5w30, but they used 0w20.

Im going to ask for n extended warranty on any part that uses engine oil. :homer:
