    Job site boxes

My electrician buddy needs another job box. Is knaack still the brand to get? Or are the cheaper options almost as good?

He was looking for a 60” one this time, and was really liking this rigid brand one

Rigid ones seem decent, I mean they're all just steel boxes, so I'd take a look at the mechanisms.

Damn good question. Looking at the ads for both of them, they both say they have a waterproof cord pass through, but don’t claim to be water tight. The rigid has some weather stripping for the lid, the knack does not, but with the way the lid closes over the raised lip I don’t really see rain being a problem for either one

I have a ridgid one going on 5ish years old, got it on clearance for 100 bucks or so. I have no complaints, it gets random shit tossed in it at the end of the day and cleaned out every other week or so. Usually sits in direct weather bolted to a block of concrete or chained to something substantial. From at I've seen they are all pretty much the same.

I’m thinking he can’t really go wrong with the rigid. The only major difference I see is the knack has a set of feet in the center, but I don’t see the rigid buckling in the center without them. It’s not like he’s going to be dropping car batteries into it from the rooftop or anything.

I just bought a ridgid 48” a few days ago. Only complaint soo far is the weatherstrip was installed by a 2 yr old. Other than that it is nice and about half the cost of the knaack

I don't think I've had bad luck with any of the major brands. Knack, greenlee and jobox all come to mind as good enough. I wouldn't want anything that relies on weatherstripping though, everything I've use always has the lid overlap the box 2 or so inches to keep it rain tight

It has both weatherstripping and the lip, somewhere between 1.5-2 inches. I haven't see. Any 'major' box that didn't have the lip and weatherstripping. They all seem pretty similar from what I've seen. Click image for larger version
