Welding safety things to be aware of

I have to ask
whats up with the deer stands?

seems to be an east coast thing?
why not go outside and shoot deer like normal people?
I’m not east coast, I’m Midwest - Missouri to be fact.

Deer stands are very common here and always have been. Basically getting up high so the white tail deer doesn’t pick up your odor. You can dawn all that fancy sent block crap you want, Bucks are still going to smell you out. Anything that’s not normal in his 365 days of the year, will make him snort and move out.

Our farm is in rolling big hills (part of the Ozark mountains) and most of it is heavily wooded. You gotta get up high to see along the woods line.

Today, I can’t stalk like I once did anymore and most of our hunters are up in age now, so we make things comfortable and why not?

I enjoy seeing and photoing the wildlife mostly anymore, but I will drop a big buck.

We have 750 acres of private farm land. About 140 acres are leased out to a farmer. All of our group have designated areas we hunt. If I had to hunt public land, I wouldn’t hunt.

I saw a momma deer give birth to this little guy this morning. It happened so fast I had to process what I just saw.

I drank glasses of milk.

I mentioned that as a joke. The milk thing is something that all old welders have told me to do. Have heard stuff on varying quantities, type of milk, temperature of the milk...

It is a bunch of bull**** it does nothing. I worked in a galvanization plant and the only two ways to get a break from the zinc fumes was either to go outside, or wear a proper respirator.

PAPR respirator. Buy it now. Lung problems can come on suddenly. Then its too late and your fawked for life. Plus its super nice having clean fresh air blowing on your face.

Hex chrome. Learn about it and avoid it. I didn't know anything about it when I got into the stainless steel world, and wish I had known the hazards.

When I worked at the mill, the 'safety team' was all up our asses over it. If we were welding, we would have to wear resperators, we finially told them to back off. They trotted out all these electronic gozmos that we had to wear
What did we find? As long as you have decent ventilation, you are fine......just like we told them

This is the only place that would make you wear so much PPE that it was dangerous because you couldn't see or move
Also the only place that I got in trouble for arriving to work too on time:laughing:

nice place
still that is a lot of work to just do what we do over here by just going outside :stirthepot:

750, I'm jealous

Same happen to me welding aluminum. Thought it was alum poisoning? Alum will roll off some chalky ass nasty smoke. Mig worse

Batch of big alum jobs rolling thru, had the weld bay setup after the first assembly and machines dialed. Went to town 13 shift. Driving home I was sketched out, got lost, forgot where I was going.

Started wearing the 3m hoods with the belt air suppy. If anyone is working steel for a living, its worth the effort. Feel much better.

that is weird
I welded aluminum all day every day for years (TIG)
I have never had a problem

is your stuff clean?

New stuff, but you never know. The mig is what I think got me. Not sure, coworker could of spiked the coffee.

Argon in the lungs. Not sure how true, but tig welding in some tight spots, it felt like my breath was shortened. Old hand made me hang upside down, guess i lived.

Walmart has muriatic acid for about $10 a gallon in the paint section for stripping coatings off prior to welding.

I know that watching Shannon use the stuff I posted up he only waits around and hour or so for zinc coated nuts to be striped off.

How does the above compare to the solution I posted a link to?

May be but I believe welding on it is not necessarily the same as dipping steel into it. I’m not saying it’s ok to breath in in any manner.

Welding stainless is hazardous?!? Any particular ss or all ss? Can you send a link to its harmful hazards while welding it?

Yeah, but when you wax that big ole mulie deer or elk way the fawk out in the middle of nowhere in steep mountain terrain, you gotta finger out the logistics of muscling him up out of there. :flipoff2:

that is why you are picky about where you shoot it

in the mountains, there is always a road downhill from me
or I can get an ATV in

but I can get them on my property if I need to, but I don't hunt that much any more

Oh ya, if you are in a tight spot, Argon will do that
hang out upside down and dump it out
I may or may not have hung out on the couch in an awkward position in my younger years a time or two:laughing:

Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a highly toxic, carcinogenic chemical associated with severe health risks, including lung and nasal cancers, nasal septum perforation, liver and kidney damage, and allergic skin reactions. Occupational exposure is heavily regulated, with strict OSHA Exposure Limits to protect workers in industrial environments. [1, 2, 3]

Had air monitoring performed periodically with the box thing.

Protect your skin. Thin hanyes white shirts are useless. Thick dark shirts, jackets. Hang a leather apron on the chin of the hood. Head cap. Wear sleeves with jackets to Protect the wrist. Watch reflection.

Sand in eyes feeling. The slight delay on auto dark hoods will affect ya.

You should go out just to watch all the wildlife and take videos and photos. I ended up buying a very nice canon 90D new a few years back and very nice glass for it. I want a 2x for it still.

Thank you, I’m glad you posted up and I will look into it.

At home, I have a pair of miller arm sleeves I got around 10 years ago. At work I got a pair a Lincoln arm sleeves. I’m a miller guy but hands down, the Lincoln’s are way better.

Luckily for me, I don’t weld production, just a huge variety of different things I build, rebuild or repair.

The heat in the summer is my biggest concern as I don’t sweat.

I actually have quite a bit of wildlife around the house
it is amazing how they come around when you dont chase them

My daughter when she was little used to feed the deer apples, she was three or four at the time, and evidently was late for her usual feeding, I was at the welding table, grinder going, welder, radio up. I turn around and this deer came in the open door to the shop and had her head in the bag of apples that my daughter would feed them from
I flipped my hood up and she picked her head up and looked at me , and went back into the bag with a look like nevermind, I got it

right now she had a little wild bunny that about walks up to you on the pathway, I have about tripped ofer the little thing three or four times in the last few weeks

Those are a nice camera, we have one too

I've got a wild rabbit that's used to me in the backyard. It led me to see its babies (usually they try to lead you away) and then nursed them. It was pretty cool to see.
