Vehicles I used to own and maybe would like to have back

Grind to fit, paint to match. I've seen the stuff you've done, you can do it.
I run out steam. After a month of almost nightly wrenching, i give up and look for something I can use.

Bit off more than I could with the 95 and ditched it.

And just no to body work. Id rather do firewood.

It's an odd thread. Guess I'm more with RunningProblem

If y'all want them, why not buy another? Does it have to be that specific VIN
Some of the vehicles mentioned seem to be fairly rare or desirable(ie super expensive)... classic broncos in my area go for an arm and a leg; rusty shell for $10k

Some can be THAT specific VIN because it was a family hand down. I've got one of those in my hands.

In my case, I have a mild interest in 86 to about 89 s10/15 Blazer. But condition is a challenge. I ALMOST ended up with a $250 one about two weeks ago. Not like a I need another project sitting on the lot but price/condition were there.

Man. I wish I harnessed the ambition and skill set to do such a thing.
If it was a stupid hard laborious swap do you think he'd be doing it? And if he invested all that would he have sold it on a whim afterwards?

70s body onto 90s frame is an almost a bolt together swap. You could pull it off if you actually got about doing it.

I get saying "oh I shouldn't have sold it when I did because the price went up and I could've sold it later for more" but hell, that's everything. It's gone for a reason, build what you want for the now :flipoff2:
You in a wrong thread then:flipoff2:

Here's some I wish I could get back.

My '70 Malibu - no pics but it looked just like this one.

My '68 Bronco bought new by my Granddad.

My '90 MJ.

And since we're on the S-10 kick, my '88. Other than the ****ty 2.8 v6 I really liked this truck.

My first car. 73 charger. 400 big block with a cam and a 727. Looked like ass with the roller paint and overspray but was solid. And chicks seemed to like it. I actually found it on CL once but it was gone again before i could get to it.
20210704_165115_HDR_015536-1.jpg

Then this was my supercharged 01 5 speed mustang. Super fun car. Long totalled but i am pretty sure someone local bought it, took the supercharger kit off, and fixed it. It was a sort of unusual color and i see one around with the same wheels and some mismatched replaced panels...
FB_IMG_1780496398937.jpg

Lastly this one. 3500 dollars worth of ford racing suspension under a 3200 dollar 282,000 mile mustang. Bone stock 4.6 5 speed. It was an 02 and i know where it is. I traded it to my brother as partial payment for his half in the aforementioned supercharged car. He sold it to a friend who has it but while i had it it was a fairly solid and clean (especially for the mileage) car. That guy ****s up everything. Paints toast. Was wrecked and bent up the subframe. Has ****ty ricer lights all on it. I want one like it but not it again as that will never be the same car.

I’ve probably owned 100 vehicles. Out of all of them, those four are the only ones I regret getting rid of. I have at least two now that I don’t think I’ll ever sell. But I guess we’ll see where life takes me.
I don't exactly like your choices but I understand. About 15 years ago my wife and I sat down and listed my previous vehicles. It was right at 100 back then. I have a problem.

S-10.jpg

A post earlier made me think of this. In ‘85 I was a make ready tech at a Chevrolet/Toyota dealer. I got to drive all of the cool stuff at the time. I special ordered this little truck and drove it for 11 years.

I got some 2.8L heads from a Camaro with larger valves and got a race engine shop to port and polish them. I put a camshaft for an X-11 Citation in it.

It screamed and yes that is a Polaroid picture. Wish I had that one back.

What vehicle do you wish you still had?

Flashbacks

At one time, I had the 90s jeep trifecta.
1 owner Comanche with a HO 4.0
Wagoneer.
90 auto, ac, yj. The yj is the only one I kinda miss.

IMG_6957.jpeg

That and a 1 owner 2004 Chevy 1500hd. That truck was the best thing I even owned, but I sold most all of them to get the down payment on my house.
I think you might be a Jeep guy!

'67 Baja bug-stolen
'69 Porsche 912- sold cuz knocked wife up
'62 vw squareback
'75 fj40
'72 bronco- will likely get this back eventually, dad currently owns it
'87 Lincoln towncar
'05 KTM 950S
'77 seagrave firetruck

i'm sure theres a ****load more if i actually thought about it...
I did one of those Bugs back in the day.

There's a bunch of factors at play. Being X years old doesn't magically make vehicles nostalgia worthy. You also need to think about who is nostalgic for them and what period in their life they are nostalgic for.
You can't buy back youth. With or without money, no one can go back in time.

What they want is the life from before. What they don't want is an expensive project taking them away from their modern toys and trips. To some it's a car. To others it's the letterman jacket they earned in high school.

You want a 24 year old Mustang? They aren't hard to find. It is the exact same car. Silver 4.6L 5 speed mustang. I bet you can even find the ford suspension.

I miss my 85' 350X. I had the forks and rear shock rebuilt, all the bearings/bushings were new, and it was jetted perfectly for the Supertrapp pipe.

Sold it and a couple other things to justify a pair of KX 450X's for the boy and I (which we hardly ever ride anymore).

That being said, its the only ATV I ever sold that I actually made money on.

Those things are dangerous! Don't get another one would be my recommendation. That one looks really nice!

I miss my 88 K5.

It ended up in a farm auction after I couldn't find the cash or time to fix it. I still have the ***le though.

Me, right before graduation 1991. My '73 Camaro.

Still my favorite car of all time.

(Also miss having a full head of hair)

Thanks, that one brought back memories. That poor old car looked like a golf ball after a hail storm. I sold it to a friend that owns a body shop. It is still around and I see people still talking about it on Facebook. I think it has been painted 10-12 times now. Originally it was Pacer Gold. I still have my hair, sorry!

Two projects I'd like to have back. Both went to good homes where the buyer completed them.

'66 Tempest w/ '70 455 & TH400 Not getting this one back because it's in Sweden.

I'd like to have had more time with this one. '84 Monte SS w/ '01 LS1 & 4L60E. In '11 I sold it to RideTech who used it for their G-body suspension development. I put the cash towards our (at the time) pending house purchase. Last I knew it was at a classic car dealer in Missouri.

My heartbreak story is my former '06 LJR. I sold it to pad the war chest anticipating being fired for refusing to get the shot. The gov backed down on that about a week or two after I sold it. It's since been parted out and repurposed.

What i want is a car that recaptures the way the way that one was. It was incredibly clean and straight and just well put together. Also they can be had but not 3200 bucks anymore and not nearly as clean. Just like that is now nearly 5k in suspension not 3.5.

I have another mustang and it is great. It was also 18 grand.

My favorite so far but it isnt a good one for the guiltless beatings that one took. In short i want that one back but unfucked up by dip****. When you invent a time machine let me know.

I spent 1/2 of yesterday scanning old pics.

100% my 86xtracab that I bought from Jack Alford in 99 and rebuilt. 4.3/r150/dual ultimate/4.88-ARB/8" bob, 8" bobbed topper... Sold in 05; regretted it ever sense. I heard the guy rolled it a few months after buying it.

also 100% my 87 4runner... My first build. Sold it to a buddy in 99... he drove for a few years and sold it to another buddy... did the SAS, etc on that in 01/02. Bought it back in ~20 or 21... sold it to another budy a bit later... I have the phone number of the guy he sold it to.... May try to track it down.

Buying another car to replace a memory isn't practical. I had those cars when they were affordable for me.
The 68 SS El Camino was $800 in 1978. I did spend about three times that making it cool over the years.
89 Carrera 4 was $32k in 1996.
91 300 ZX TT was $28k 1992.

The 89 Porsche would be $100-150k. It was the first all wheel drive Carrera, had an air-cooled 3.6 and is very collectable now. I do regret selling that car. There was just something about it. However, if I still had it I would be afraid to take it out of the garage.
A 68 SS El Camino that isn't a total POS is $50-75k.
The 300Zs were mostly riced out in the 2000's.

Found some pictures. They are a picture of a picture of a clock I made years ago.

Torn on this, the only one I wish I still had would be my first gen MR2, but if I still had it (and it still ran) I'd have probably lost my license by now.

Sorry about the Jeep. I'm glad you didn't get the clot shot! That Monte Carlo is awesome. They were fun to drive stock with the 305, I can only imagine what it would be like with an LS.

thanks for proving the point. You don't want the car back. You want the point in your life back. The car is just your trophy. You can absolutely have a 25 year old silver mustang with a 5 speed. Even ones not ****ed by some dip****.

Milk, gas, tobacco, entries to events, television, internet, phones, clothes, and plenty of other luxuries cost more. People keep paying for them.

There's a bunch of factors at play. Being X years old doesn't magically make vehicles nostalgia worthy. You also need to think about who is nostalgic for them and what period in their life they are nostalgic for. Like look at all the dumbass boomers. A third of them are nostalgic for whatever late 60s car they crashed while blackout drunk on new years in 1970. A third of them are nostalgic for whatever early 1960s car they remember learning to drive in. And a third of them are nostalgic for the mid 70s compact or early 1970s barge they bought in the mid-late 70s kicked out of their commune and having to find a real job and sold after they knocked up their first wife in 1979

You can paint similar patterns onto newer vehicles and generations.

Every asshole who got a job at their uncle's firm and bought a house with daddy's down-payment money as in a position to have hobby project cars way earlier than the people who needed to work for that **** so whatever they're nostalgia for gets driven up in price sooner in terms of years. So the 1995 Toyota (because that's what those kind of people bought in 1995) they got given in high school 2003 jumped in price in like 2017 or something.

We see comparable in the XJ market. People who are nostalgic for them are nostalgic for 1997-2010ish. Prices went crazy recently, but they were always middle class vehicles and prices have tanked because the people who would be nostalgic for them don't have the money for a "classic car" or a "project car".

People don't have nostalgia for -90ish Rangers when they were new. They have nostalgia for when they were low value enough to be the kind of thing you or your buddy drove in high-school or college. And because they were fairly useful vehicles with some sticking power that took awhile. So like late 00s early 2010s for those early 90s Rangers. And like XJs they weren't rich people vehicles so not a whole lot of people who would be buyers right now are.

Some vehicles will never jump in value beyond simple age + condition because there isn't a cohort that's enthusiastic enough about them (i.e. basically everything I own except the Ranger, lol)

So basically if he wants a 90ish body style Ranger there's still a little time but he has to figure it out before the economy picks back up in however many years and all those people say "ah, now is the time for a project car".

On a semi-related note, vehicle service lives have been increasing with time. Those sorts of "X years old then vs X years old now" comparisons don't make as much sense as they once did.
Wow, thank you for the lesson. I will take it under advisement.

Here's one I'm going to regret for a long time:
20260218_222306~2.jpg

71 bronco that was my uncles. Built it up for him over a bunch of summers, 2.5" lift, d44 front, disc brake, power steering, zf 5spd, np205, found the halfcab and converted it over. Painted it Hunter Green. Built a 302 for it as my tech school engine project. Put 100's of hours into aquiring, rebuilding, & installing the parts. He paid parts cost.

My cousin inherited it and offered it to me for $15k as a "family deal". I'm not in a spot to be locking up cash in something like that while I'm in the middle of building a house. So have to let it go.

I get saying "oh I shouldn't have sold it when I did because the price went up and I could've sold it later for more" but hell, that's everything. It's gone for a reason, build what you want for the now :flipoff2:
Don't be ****ing up my thread asshole! Maybe this one fits old men better. :flipoff2:
