We have always kept important papers like deed, ***les, birth certs etc in a safety deposit box at the local bank. We have been informed that they are phasing out this service. On top of that we just found out the safety deposit boxes are not fire proof. Shame on me for not knowing this but I was really surprised.

We had copies of things like patient advocate papers at home in a supposedly waterproof lock box. When opened we found all the papers damp and moldy from condensation so that was not good.

So, any recommendations on a good fireproof/waterproof lock box for home?

Following. I don’t need a large safe, just something fire proof to keep small important thing in. ***les, passports, cash, a couple hand guns, etc

New bank, buy a 3 hour minimum safe, build a bunker to stash stuff and survive the apocalypse....
Profit

So, I went down the rabbit hole of safes a while back.

Fire rated safes list the rating based on when the safe reaches 350* internally, which is below the threshold of paper combusting inside the safe. But to get the right safe, you gotta ask some questions.

How long of a response time do you give the fire department til they are able to start putting out the fire?

Do you want to store data/harddrives inside? They go bad at 125*.

This 1 hr rated case that's 30 lbs empty was the best rating i could find for reasonable money. Its a substantial piece of hardware when placed next to my other 30 min firebox.

I keep it inside my 90 min rated safe so i can convince myself I have any sort of chance of whatever's inside being salvagable.

when you start really diving into residential safes, it quickly becomes apparent that until you start spending a ****load of coin, they're mostly selling a placebo effect illusion of believing your stuff is secure.

Safe Dude might have some valuable input here

Seriously
Dive into the rabbit hole, fire safes are yet another bait n switch gotcha product.
Literally, the ratings are manipulated to be whatever they want.
Big difference in what you are protecting.
Literally 5/8" rock is I think 45 minutes...

I bought mine from Costco. I have read about the 1260 and 1400 ratings enough to know the one from Costco will work for what I need. I didn't want one the average person could walk out the door with.

Agreed. That’s why I got a 2 ton bank vault. :flipoff2:

Since I’m from the Redundant Office of Redundancy, I’m sticking a data safe inside this one for double protection. Worst case scenario, my house is close enough to a fire station that I’m sure the fire should be put out in an hour, but this was free, so…..

That thing is not water proof. All the waterproof stuff needs to brag about their IP rating.
Look for IP## when trying to get stuff that keeps water out. The higher the second number, the more it will keep water out.

I don't have a safe and/or worry about a flood, I'm talking from the point of diving and keep your stuff dry. Look up what ratings go for diving and it might work for your situation, too.

OK, so it's no good as a false flag peace of mind appliance unless its tacti-cool rated?

I have a box store safe, but a...Sentry(?) fireproof jobber inside that. Like a large brief case. Documents go in that. I figure a safe inside a safe? yea? maybe?

I got an old data vault safe. It has 2 sets of doors on it. Damn thing weighs almost 2,000 lbs. I would like to think my guns in there would survive a fire. Problem with these safes is they are huge and have a tiny interior. Damn thing is 6-7’ tall 4’ wide 3’ deep. Then on the inside you put 6-8 rifles in there and it starts getting really tight.

I have 2 more safes that would have to put in a house while it was being built. One of them has to weigh close to 8-10,000#. It’s a cool double door safe.

That’s cool though. When you have to build the house around the sob. Did you have to use one of your big loaders to move it?

I used to keep a sentry fire/water proof box inside my bigger safe. The little sentry just has ***les birth certificate passport etc in it. It’s only rated for 1/2 hour at 1550°.

But inside the cannon which is rated for 30 min at 1200°. Theoretically the inside of the little sentry shouldn’t get that hot since the outside of it would be shielded by the bigger safe.

But the safe got crowded so now the sentry is sitting top of the cannon.

I’m surprised 486 has left over pickle jars after his adventures in pyrolysis. :flipoff2:
I don't understand. They don't do well with heat so where would they be used...
Maybe for collecting condensate?
2-liter soda bottles are much more disposable, glass is way too high value to be used for such things

It took be a few years to finally get this delivered to my house in Eastern AZ from Phoenix. I live in the forest, so fire rating was my main objective.

Initially the owner of AZ Lock and Safe wanted $7500 delivered. I finally picked it up about a year ago for $3500 delivered. ****in thing weighs at least 5000 pounds. 1850* fire rating, for 3 hours. I'm a fat ****, and I can fit inside the left side.

It's ugly, but holds a lot of goodies inside.
