My JK is sold, or at least their financing is doing their dotting I's and crossing Ts (USAA)

I am looking for something reliable for kinda all around off road.

I would like it to be able to tow a small trailer with my RTT and camping stuff.

Nothing new, no Stelantis anything.

I have found some off-the wall stuff that may work with some tweaks and an SAS which I am not afraid of. Done one before.

1) 1996 Chevy Tahoe 4x4. 171k. Needs exhaust, otherwise well kept.

Figure SAS and larger rear axle. Already V8 power, should be a reliable drivetrain. Not in love with it persay, but it holds potential

2) 2012 Chevy Canyon with a 5.3l. I didnt know this package existed. 5.3/4l60 4x4. 91k

Needs axle swapped but should do what I want

3) TJs finding a decent contender currently has been a struggle. Seems most are dana 35 rears, and pretty beat. Not a lot of room, that isnt the biggest issue as 2 out of three of my kids are on their own.

I dont know a lot about imports, so their reliability to me (especially the non Toyotas) is questionable. For example an Exterra.

I have looked at some trucks. I get, too many sensors and gizmos vibes. I had a 2012 Liberty several years back. If you pull the ABS line on the front (overextended it when crossing a washout) NOTHING in the 4wd system works. It killed the transfer case even (electric shift)

Not interested in playing that game.

Unfortunately both Chevys I looked at had electric shift transfercases. That could likely be remedied. Swap in a 241 potentially? Heck, swap a 4l80 behind the LS Canyon? Someone local is selling a 700r4 with 203/205 doubler....SM465? I liked my 4.3l/465 combo I had prior.

80 series Land Cruisers are neat, but spendy.

Samurai? Kinda extreme on the small side.

Most XJs for sale here are destroyed or going for quite a bit of money.

I wouldnt mind finding a single cab, long bed F350. Haven't found one yet though.

Kinda broad range of examples there. Agreed an 05+ F250 single cab would be great.

That Tahoe should be pretty good if you swap in a 60 and 14/Sterling if you’re talking off road that needs that. Should be able to sleep in the back.

I missed the tahoe part or the '96.

I cant say enough howmuch i love my 8.1 gmtoo800 burban.

Heres 2, one dirty and med $, one clean and high $ but low miles. I got mine @225k and other than some hoses, water pump, and plugs/wires, no issues.

I wouldn't mind a suburban, however I dont want the length.

I have a 454/4l80e/14b. Except it is 2wd and stuck under a 1948 Ford F8.

1. seems like it would be a squeaky POS

2. Actually cool that it comes with a 5.3. I would imagine just buying one would eat all of your budget. Someone here or on P found one and built it on tons. Kept all the lights off on the dash too buy matching VSS or some ****. Cool ride.

3. Would also be an option. D35 can be swapped easy as F. Just call up any aftermarket company and they'll send you a fresh 44/60 whatever you want.

05 or newer single cab long bed F250/350 would be at the top of my list. Already has good axles, decent suspension, good powertrain options and all the space in the world for any junk you want to drag along with you.
The answer is yes.

Found a 93 Chevy 2500. 454/4l80/241 single cab longbed. 166k. Bodies pretty rough. Said he would take $2k

And you think a $2k thrashed 33 year old truck fits that bill?
Thats the balance, right? Spend $15k on a newer F350, or $2k on an older truck and $1200 for a front axle, I believe brackets etc for my last SAS was approx $800. Rework the transfercase front output possibly, I believe it was less than a few hundred bucks in my old 231 I did.

So, say, in total be under $6k? Then throw some tires on it. Is 166k troubling/worrisome mileage on a 93 454/4l80?

I am not saying its the answer, but it is a way to go.

I know your not searching for Dodge, but the 2nd gen (97-04) Dakotas are PCI. Not canbus. Mine has a 4.7, but you can get an older one with a 318 or 360. Big frame, small body. My 03 is a crew cab. V8, manual. The electric shift case i tabbed a manual shifter, then went doubler with cable shifters. You could do a small solid axle to keep width down. Or tons from an 05+ superduty like mine. Super simple truck. Ive cut mine up and removed alot of systems and truck functions fine. And they are dirt cheap. Paid $1800 with 107k miles. Comes in standard cab, extended cab, and quad cab.

This is tempting me WAY more than it should, meets little requirements but I loved my old 04 (this is an 06) sold it, reluctantly in NY and the owner totalled it not a week later. The 6.0 was flawless the entire time owning it. I left it alone though, no chips etc.
