My JK is sold, or at least their financing is doing their dotting I's and crossing Ts (USAA)
I am looking for something reliable for kinda all around off road.
I would like it to be able to tow a small trailer with my RTT and camping stuff.
Nothing new, no Stelantis anything.
I have found some off-the wall stuff that may work with some tweaks and an SAS which I am not afraid of. Done one before.
1) 1996 Chevy Tahoe 4x4. 171k. Needs exhaust, otherwise well kept.
Figure SAS and larger rear axle. Already V8 power, should be a reliable drivetrain. Not in love with it persay, but it holds potential
2) 2012 Chevy Canyon with a 5.3l. I didnt know this package existed. 5.3/4l60 4x4. 91k
Needs axle swapped but should do what I want
3) TJs finding a decent contender currently has been a struggle. Seems most are dana 35 rears, and pretty beat. Not a lot of room, that isnt the biggest issue as 2 out of three of my kids are on their own.
I dont know a lot about imports, so their reliability to me (especially the non Toyotas) is questionable. For example an Exterra.
I have looked at some trucks. I get, too many sensors and gizmos vibes. I had a 2012 Liberty several years back. If you pull the ABS line on the front (overextended it when crossing a washout) NOTHING in the 4wd system works. It killed the transfer case even (electric shift)
Not interested in playing that game.
Unfortunately both Chevys I looked at had electric shift transfercases. That could likely be remedied. Swap in a 241 potentially? Heck, swap a 4l80 behind the LS Canyon? Someone local is selling a 700r4 with 203/205 doubler....SM465? I liked my 4.3l/465 combo I had prior.
80 series Land Cruisers are neat, but spendy.
Samurai? Kinda extreme on the small side.
Most XJs for sale here are destroyed or going for quite a bit of money.
I wouldnt mind finding a single cab, long bed F350. Haven't found one yet though.
