I have the oppurtunity to grab a $1000 3 Speed Stak Tcase, thats already got the yokes and spline setup ill need. Dont know much about them, would prefer an atlas obviously, but the price has me intrigued.

Whats everyone opinions and experiences with Stak?

My setup will be:
Light wheeler (4-4500LBS), 600HP, Auto, Max 37" tire size.

There are at least 3 Stak boxes I can think of, the Mini, Monster and Bronco.
I have one of the early Mini 3 speed boxes, like S/N 20 something. It's been there for 15+ years, I fought some popping out gear issues where I had to re machine it, I broke a cluster gear where I was down for months trying to find a parts box to rob it out of.
I think it's a pretty solid design, but understand if you have issues with it there is NO ONE that will support it or sell you parts, it will become a nicely machined wall hanger where you show off to your friends your poor financial decisions.
I actually sold off my parts case to someone else that needed parts, I decided if something else happened again I would just get an Atlas as the headache of finding parts almost broke me.
I do love the 5:1 and 3:1 ratios.

Thats kind of what im afraid of, saving money on the initial investment, versus having support thru the life of the tcase.

Its a 3 speed Monster box I think

My one experience, had to ride shotgun with a club member who just put a 3 speed in his XJ. He was having all sorts of issues with it staying and going into gear. After the run he planned to sell it and get an Atlas. This was 20ish years ago tho.

My old whitebrowithafro buggy solved the popping out of gear issue with pneumatic shifters.

I fought some popping out gear issues where I had to re machine it,
I bought one around 2007. I had the same issue with it popping out gear, typically when I had it in low-low and coming down a steep incline. For instance, it popped out on me coming down the steps on Black Bear. It was the low range selector (3:1 - N - 5.4:1) that would pop out; I got in the habit of keeping a hand on the shift lever with a little pressure.

Other than that, I had no issues with it (2005 LJ, stock 4.0, 37's). I wish they'd worked out that shifter issue and were still around, I'd put one in my current Jeep.

There’s been on on Facebook/craigslist here for literally years. As someone who owns a MMW Dana 300 and doesn’t have support annymore myself unless it was free I would pass. Save up for atlas build driveshafts once.

Really solid transfer case. If you don’t mind lighting $1000 on fire and walking away from it, it’s a great investment.

Buddys would pop out of gear enough that he welding 2 peices of flat stock on the shifters and had a pin to hold it in low. Never broke it though.

Brother installed one in his and it’s working great, but I don’t know if I’d want that in something for long trips.
