Forgot to call Miss Utility....

They make repair sleeves for this, not a hard repair to get it shut down. Just Messy. Usually I deal with this with water lines, really wet day for the guys. Would suck to be oil. Seems like there's experts in this though...

Washington, hold my beer. If California is not going to give us an explosion, we will.

Deaths confirmed, others missing after chemical implosion at facility in SW Washington

LONGVIEW, Wash. (KATU) — Fatalities have been confirmed following a “major” chemical implosion at the Nippon facility in Longview, Wash., on Tuesday morning.

First responders were initially called out to the scene at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Facility just before 7:20 a.m.

The Nippon facility is located in the 3400 block of Industrial Way (Highway 432). Residents have been asked to avoid the area.
A vat of “white liquor” at the facility imploded, according to Longview Fire Officials. Multiple people suffered chemical burns and other injuries in the implosion.

White liquor is a strong alkaline liquid made mostly of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. In the Kraft process, it is used to cook wood chips and turn them into pulp for papermaking by dissolving the substances that hold the wood fibers together. It is considered extremely dangerous and is highly corrosive.

The white liquor tank was 60% full at the time of the implosion, fire officials said. The cause has not yet been determined.

In an update just after 11 a.m., Longview Fire officials confirmed fatalities from this incident.
Officials say 10 people, including one firefighter, were injured and transferred to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview and PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver. The injuries ranged from critical to minor.

A spokesperson for PeaceHealth later issued a statement, saying it had received nine patients from the incident. Of those patients, PeaceHealth said one died, two were transferred, and six are in fair condition. PeaceHealth said it does not expect any additional patients. The injured firefighter was treated and released.

No IDs will be released until families are notified.

Fire officials confirm that there were still individuals who remain unaccounted for. It is unclear how many.

I was down in WT, my cousin and I went on a pipeline leak call. when we pulled up crude was shooting 10 + feet in the air. Company man said that was just residual pressure as the valves had been turned off an hour before. we unloaded the backho cousin got situated, then handed me a 30 pound fire extingusher, and said if you see a spark lock it open throw in the hole and run, don't slow down because I'll be running right behind you. Pipe was about 10 feet down and there was a 1 inch crack in it. The crew climbed in the hole and clamped a patch on it as we loaded up and headed back to town for a beer

As someone that has gotten that **** on me a few times, it is nasty stuff
You get it one you, you drop what you are doing and get it off

One time I thought that I had a water valve ocasionally drip on my hardhat once so I ignored it , it was white liquor
By the time I figured it out, went back to the locker room, that **** had burned a bald spot in my hair

Good news, to the people the died, I am cure they will post an obscure plaque somewhere with the guys name on it. I didn't work for this company on particular, but I did for the place next door, I cant imagine that it is any different over there

My money is an operator fell asleep or something and forgot to open a valve to vent that tank and they sucked it flat

true
the buildings were unsafe
some didnt even have a roof anymore
Others, I really dont know what was holding them up, one floor that I know in one particular building I think the pipes were keeping that deck up there

We would write them up all the time, they dont give a ****, safety was too busy patting themselves on the back for painting a hand rail, or putting down a new crosswalk in a place that was usless.
again, this was for a different company (located next door to this one)
I am guessing the culture isnt that far off

also
I dont miss working there

I used to say, dont die here, you will be forever known as 'that guy that died over by shipping'

My nephew used to work with the tech that died. Said he was the best on the crew.

methyl methacrylate, a chemical used in the manufacture of resins and plastics .. .quoting original post..

i know i've discussed stuff on the old site

i'm pretty sure when i worked with maybe 25 different plastic injection molding machines i probably worked with this stuff..

the money was great, and lots of overtime

but its been 30+ years..

What are your recollections of the safety procedures? I’m assuming you were one of the certified first responders.

Was this the NASA plastic?

I'm even surprised this business is even allowed in CA
Its an aerospace manufacturing facility like Lockheed Martin among a few other old school type manufacturing places. Methyl Methacrylate is used in making plexiglass among other things...

Why do Intel and AMD have wafer fabs in the bay area which are a whole nother witches brew of haz mat chemicals under 1 roof? Similar/same reasons...established biz and cheaper to stay put than relocate to China. That and some biz can't relo outside the US for national security reasons...
