Absolutely NOT. **** government work. The healthcare and long term plans are ****. The Boomers ****ed everyone and now government jobs have **** pay with not much retirement and you don't keep a ****ing god damn anything. **** no.
If you get in with .gov as a starter job, build yourself up, ride the awesome benefits (they are) and enjoy the ride, it isnt a bad plan.

I am sorry someone hurt you though :flipoff2:

Joking aside, in my opinion he should grab ANYTHING that waddles past with benefits and 401k options at this point...even if it isnt ideal. IANAL, YMMV, TACA, etc...

okay  Co-worker pays ~485 bucks for Healthcare coverage for a family of 4. And if she's here 20yrs it's locked for life at that cost.
Not many places offer the ability to stay on health insurance anymore. 20 years is a LONG time to stay at one place of employment. The cost will go up though. I promise you. She won't be paying $485 in 5 years.
Lived in California for 4 years... Therefore.... I'm fine.
Enjoy trying to buy a house. I bought mine at 30. You're probably on your way to doing better than me. Best of luck with the kid, the house, the 6 months of insurance, the Reserves. Had you posted up being in Nevada I might have found you a reliable source of income with benefits.

No one hurt me.
This is the guy who missed enlistment renewal then went reserve. He should have just re-enlisted instead of moving his whole family across the country again just to live with his in-laws and be told where to park his vehicles for their benefit.

It's awesome paying about 33% into my retirement. If I didn't work governments I could choose not to pay retirement, or maybe stick with just 20%. Gotta love those forced contribution increases the government has every 2 years when things get expensive.

I got news for you buddy. We were going to leave California regardless. I didn't want to come to California to begin with. I didn't get the option to pick my duty station. It sure as hell wouldn't have been California anywhere. maybe Quantico, or Lejuene. Or Leonardwood. Not California. I was going to use duty station incentive for reenlistment, too. For one of those Stations. Probably Leonardwood or Lejuene. You're acting like it's the end of the world. It's not.

I am not the slightest bit concerned with your world. Honestly I'm shocked you came back here. I wouldn't if I was you.

Enjoy the house you're working towards and living with your in-laws. I said I could have helped you find a job and you wanted to throw ****. I've had my help from here in nice and learned to make the necessary changes.

I sat through some USDA/NRCS recruitment with some college students last week. District Conservationist giving the presentation, not even someone typically on the HR/Recruitment side of things. They highlighted how awesome their health insurance is. They didn't mention retirement, but the GS scale has changed since I worked for the NPS 20+ years ago. NRCS ain't hiring anyone right now though, they didn't call it a hiring freeze, called it a "frost." :homer:

They said you're pretty well guaranteed a "step" increase annually, and if/when grade promotion happens it's usually 2 grades, i.e. going from a GS-5 to a GS-7. Google's AI says with 4 years military experience, he'd probably hire in at a GS 5 or 7. I'm only talking about what USDA/NRCS had to say here and I'm sure there's a lot of variables, but do your job, get good performance reviews, and it doesn't take long to move up, especially if you're willing to move. They said if you're willing to move where they need you, you can move up quick.

they currently have lots of seasonal job postings. Ashke McBriguide isn't about to apply for a seasonal job. He has the reserves and 6 months to figure it out. By then he might have an in with some IT stuff from working in Fresno.

Maybe he could become a teacher if the reserves and the IT job from Fresno doesn't work out. Clearly he isn't going to swing a hammer or do electrical work. Heck...I could have had him hired doing concrete work until he fell asleep with probably a single phone call but he didn't need help until WELL past missing his enlistment re-up, and moving to WV.

Like I said...zero ****s given. He will be back to needing help in his 40s and still won't own a place. Always got that next best thing. I see it frequently to.

Trump admin just allocated $2Bn into AI today. So....interesting perspective.

Nobody is hiring the CISSPTIA+SMDMFER certified corporate IT people that you want him to be. Corporate IT is shrinking because a) tech is shrinking b) a lot of those people who moved from IT to tech are searching for jobs in IT too

Datacenter techs are what's in demand right now and if he did any IT **** in the .mil they'll probably hire him because employers see .mil and they hear "not too lazy and willing to put up with a whole bunch of bull****". He doesn't need an IT if he wants to Pico to hire him to unplug the wrong cable.

The guards make over $100k easy with overtime.

Apply for this.... if you work to an AS in an electrical field on your own time you can potentially move into Hydro Operations.
$150-250k job. Its a 5 year apprenticeship that a moderately intelligent chimpanzee could complete. Ends up at over $60/hr with more overtime than you could want.

Cost of living in area is low if you want it to be, and retire at 55 with a NYS pension. It is a VERY rural area, so it can be difficult to find candidates.

I wasn’t going to chime in this go round, but what the hell.

What most people are trying to say is that you’re at an inflection point. When you move back to where you came from with ****ty influences , a ****ty hourly wage job, ****ty transportation, and ****ty living accommodations, what “progress” has been made? Just that you were a Marine?

You moved back to one of the 5 poorest states in the country and want to go work for the national parks? That’s a job for somebody that wants to live in an RV or has a spouse that makes good money. Money isn’t everything, but you went from being so destitute that being just on the other side of that line seems “fine”.

You are already starting to use your wife and in-laws as excuses for the way things are. Yes, women are going to want to be near their family. You compromise by living within a day’s drive of them (assuming you have a reliable vehicle for interstate travel).

Richmond, VA is beautiful and wealthy. Lexington, KY is beautiful and wealthy. Neither have California level house pricing, either would be easy to make $100-$150k year in.

Keep the damn vehicles and let them sit somewhere, but focus on what’s important rather than arguing about a ****ing GM 6.2….
I didnt read the thread. Where is he moving to?

I know the guards.... he'll fit right in. They don't even have a shotgun to share between all of them.

Life changing career path.

the PA,WV,OH armpit/asscrack of the midwest
Theres money in C PA if youre not a complete dumbass. Lot of work in State College with Penn State and the supporting companies. Hell get a job at PSU and your kids get discounted tuition.. Several state prisons, Geo corp at the ICE facility near Penn State, Hawbaker for road work, FCI Lewisburg, all kinds of energy companies driving around. Friends kid works at Geo they start guards around $40 an hour and his kid is a dumbass. Hawbaker pays pretty good. Plus Id bet hes got that .Mil disability racked up. Married with kids at 100% is like $4600 a month. Almost all the above prefer Vets.

You dont need t9 move bro. Come open a bank acct, get your permit, get your cdl, then transfer it back to your home state. You could be back home in 3 weeks and I wouldnt charge you a dime.

You could also be local. Youre white so that gets priority. Crane operator, fuel hauling, equipment, you name it.

Anyway, just saying you dont need to move, could get your cdl and jam out.
IMHO this is a solid offer.

SW PA/Pittsburgh area isnt the asscrack of anywhere. He is an hour or less from one of the most liveable and affordable metro areas in the country.
