The one I brought up was common story for that area and not just happened to motorcycles. Bad/blind alley that people california stopped to get on the main streetI T- boned someone just like OP about 6 months into street riding when I was 21 or 22, so yea VERY common story. These types of accidents are generally preventable, and mine was a life long lesson for sure. Basically dont go faster than you can stop for people pulling out of driveways, intersections, etc. Harley brakes suck, so that definitely needs to be factored in.
I just looked at the intersection again and it wasn't as "blind" as I recall but people would get a "running start" to get on the main street. This was early 90s before cellphones or the like so less distracted driving compared to now. By the same token, I've had more bikers in my area have to do death wobble stand up because they thought they were owed my lane
This is with me already driving within a foot of the right white line. My area is also cars going into the wrong lane because they think they are on a closed course and drive like ****.
To OP, I hope your nephew heals well and fully. I also hope he doesn't get too gun shy over bikes.
