I think what you're missing is it isn't that 1 particular move it's the fact that you put so much stock into inanimate objects while you have a wife and kids.

Yes, you can afford it now, but what if.

The city put the handicap spot in specifically for my wife's grandmother after her car accident. It's a license plate specific sign. So yeah, technically I'm not supposed to park there. But since it's meant for my wife's family, and it's their license plate....

Well, I figured he’s in his low 30s late 20s. About 30 years old I was the head engineer of two divisions of a very popular aftermarket parts company and had patents.

At first it during that period I lived on the beach near a bunch of bars and restaurants. It probably wasn’t the most responsible thing I ever did, but it was a heck of a lot of fun to spend your late 20s in low 30s in that party environment.

At 34 I bought my house. Couldn’t afford to live at the beach, but was getting ready to settle down and have a family.

Did I mention that my gf/eventual wife worked for a motion picture company and we competed for who made the most money each year.

At 38 years old, everything went to **** and I will let you have that. That’s where I bow out, but I don’t think he’s that old.

My lady drove an 05 Yukon and I drove a company 99 WJ v8. When I was injured, I was driving a lot in a FJ cruiser on 39’s It was borderline no smartphone time so no pictures but if you’ve ever seen Peterson‘s 4WOR you know the truck.

We had other cars, including a 98 Tahoe two door that I used to drive in Mexico all the time. New enough to be dead, reliable old enough to not get stolen. And then we had toys.

You ask what if, but it happened already. The what if bad **** X DID happen, catastrophically so, and I got through it without too much hiccup. That as a reality check akright. Because holy ****. I don't intend to move like that ever again and I'll plan better for the **** show or just go ahead with transport. You guys do make me think and reflect. Sometimes I feel guilty. But not about this.

I stand corrected. We don’t have anything like that on the West Coast. Even if I put a spot in front of my house, it’s for anybody with a placard or a plate.

In just 7 short years he's come all the way from squatting in a buddies enclosed porch with a broken squarebody burb parked out front, a summer job with the CCC, and a sentimental irrational attachment to a collection of video games on the desk keeping him warm at night....

to squatting in the inlaws basement awaiting the arrival of his second child with a broken squarebody burb in their backyard, a summer job as a subervisor with the CCC and a sentimental irrational attachment to a collection of broken ****boxes to keep him warm at night as well as unencumbered access to grandma in law's handicap spot out front...

I'm not yet 30, and I appreciate your input. Life comes at your pretty hefty sometimes. I have stated previously, I don't want to enjoy this **** later, and I am in a position where I am fortunate enough that we don't have to. I get to raise my kids in this fun ****. If things get dicey, I'll make the right call and liquidate. Sure, it'll suck. But I won't be family in jeopardy over this ****. And I hopefully will never have to. I didn't have to for this trip. Nobody is wondering if I'm going to out food on the table tomorrow. Or pay for diapers. Or put fuel in the tank.

I got rid of all the games. I couldn't just buy a house overnight while I was in California. This is just temporary. We're house hunting.

This is not a fair comparison. You're talking about a time when I was broke **** and taking handouts, to employed fresh out of the Marines, ready to do college and move on, and buy a house. We aren't financially struggling. I can see your point. It certainly looks silly but. Everything is ok.

Also not a basement :flipoff2:

The newer burban he got isnt bad. Its safe and has lots of room for a family. If he sticks with a stockish drivetrain it can be reliable. My guess if that truck was box stock he wouldn't have had the breakdown he had.
But its probably a good bet he’ll glue his sleeve to the intake again while trying to put a tractor motor in it.


I think he will cry everytime he fills it with fuel to, I know I do.

The breakdown had nothing to do with not being stock and everything to do with ignorance of a bad ujoint. Big oof in my part.

I don't care for the 700r4, but for everything the truck is, and has, I can't complain, 'specially for what I paid. Rust free and all, I got a hell of a deal. You ain't seen 'tyet but it's got an onboard compressor with 20 gal tank, too.

I have zero desire to put an IH motor in a turd Chevy.

I try not to think about the fueling up part. It gets 12mpg. I'll just leave it at that.

It mostly is stock. Simple stock 350, has an aftermarket air intake and Edelbroken headers, the 700r4 has heavier shift bands, and the axles have lockers and 4.56 gears. Other than that, it's stock tcase. Then the lift of course.

I worked for International and now i work for ford. Trust me when i say bringing up International diesels is not helping your point they ever made good stuff. And fords requests had nothing to do with the 6.0 and 6.4 being **** engines, the lazy engineers at IH did. They built literally two good diesels ever. The idi and the powerstroke 7.3s. Everything else from their road tractor garbage on down to their pickup engines was and is junk. We had a literal mountain of engine cores behind the service shop at all times. We averaged putting in about 12 engines a week at international. At ford its about 2 to 4. :flipoff2:


Rant over carry on. I just needed to let that one out. I dont know if international gas engines were any good, Ive never seen a truck old enough to have one that still ran:flipoff2:

Nevermind the fact that just looking at where Ashke was, where he is and projecting that out to where he wants to be none of those people are who he should be taking advice from.
 
I wasn’t going to chime in this go round, but what the hell.

What most people are trying to say is that you’re at an inflection point. When you move back to where you came from with ****ty influences , a ****ty hourly wage job, ****ty transportation, and ****ty living accommodations, what “progress” has been made? Just that you were a Marine?

You moved back to one of the 5 poorest states in the country and want to go work for the national parks? That’s a job for somebody that wants to live in an RV or has a spouse that makes good money. Money isn’t everything, but you went from being so destitute that being just on the other side of that line seems “fine”.

You are already starting to use your wife and in-laws as excuses for the way things are. Yes, women are going to want to be near their family. You compromise by living within a day’s drive of them (assuming you have a reliable vehicle for interstate travel).

Richmond, VA is beautiful and wealthy. Lexington, KY is beautiful and wealthy. Neither have California level house pricing, either would be easy to make $100-$150k year in.

Keep the damn vehicles and let them sit somewhere, but focus on what’s important rather than arguing about a ****ing GM 6.2….

You aren't wrong though.

Grandma qualifies as handicap, family asks city so they make a handicap restriction parking spot by the house. Family should have a placard for hanger to be able to use it.

Family is **** bags who think it's theirs, so they set their son in law up on the hook for any legal issues by not parking there themselves.

Actual trash. I'm sure there is some redeeming quality in those people, but it's buried deep and the best thing you can do is be independent of them as much as possible.
