Ok so I got an old yard forklift. 6 cylinder propane with manual transmission 1 fwd n rev shifter and 1 4 speed range shifter.
Has old ford huge 5 lug pattern.
No idea motor and having to change the clutch on it. Has 7/16" bellhousing bolts and appears to possibly be ford industrial but NO casting numbers on the block anywhere and no tags.

The immediate problem is starter wont come out. Only has 1 external 5/16" mounting bolt ear on side that threads through bellhousing into starter. NO other visible bolts. Bellhousing loose but starter is bolted to it.
Only mounting bolton the side. Inside and bottom smooth and tight to block and bellhousing. Not second bolt ear at all.

do the starters ever press in or how can I remove this?

Got the starter out. Long ass bolts through the whole thing like the old Ford 8n tractors.

Now I need to remove brushes to reassemble the starter. Square drive that 5/16" what MTS square drive size is that?

Forklift actually has really good brakes and a working parking brake too.

Newest thing is I got starter off and clutch changed. BUT the starter gear is engaged and won't release back away from the starter.

Looks to me like a coupler that is two chan sprockets side by side (motor/load) and they are coupled together by a circle of double wide roller chain.

I’ve seen it lots in industry, don’t not know the name.

Does the same job as a lovejoy coupler—— has some slop that allows for misalignment or vibration.

Yeah hydraulic pump on front of motor with 2 sprockets and a chain wrapped around them to couple them together. PRetty smart idea but makes holding the motor hard when trying to keep it from rotating. Luckily these old motors don't have much compression so able to turn it by hand off flywheel
