An Idiots guide to House Repair

can't see it well in the pic, but FWIW - if you've got unique old switches, don't toss them immediately

I had bunch of 50's pushbutton switches in the previous house we reno'd. they were apparently desirable and I got $50 or $100 each for them. I had something like 8, so it was definitely worth the effort.
I'm pissed I didn't scavenge the "silent" mercury switch from grandpa's basement lights
his thinking was that if there was a gas leak you could still have lights down there while fixing on stuff

Spent the better part of 2.5 evenings up in the attic after I discovered mold growing in my freshly redone drywall. :flipoff:

Turns out the elechicken got too frisky with the hvac condensate drain when he crawled pasted this to wire the kitchen.

2 days, 3 separate trips to get parts, it’s fixed and I can get this humidity level down out of the 100% range. To add insult to injury and after I get done, I run into a contractor who said it should have been installed over the giant collection pan under the unit instead of over the open insulation. Guess I’ll do that whenever it fails next time…. :homer:

Mad respect for the crackheads who installed this unit, they must have taken it up piece by piece, while tripping on pvc glue. Lord knows I was.

It took 3 coats of paint to get rid of the over spray, but the final coat of wall paint has been applied to the office.

On a side note. Not all laminate flooring is made equally. What I bought is not the “score twice with a razor then break” kind. It’s alot more dense. :lmao:

the blurple stuff is waterproof drywall.
No such thing. Water resistant at best, if it was a tub I wouldn’t be concerned but at least go up 2 or 3 feet with a true waterproof surface, schluter board or cement board. Now of he’s going to go over the hole thing with schluter membrane it will be okay but every bathroom I’ve been in that had drywall like that in a shower has had issues within a few years.

Ah.

Its gonna get the fancy membrane too. I don't know what they put in drywall in the 70's but it held up fine until I ripped out the bathroom wall. The only cement board I found was 1' tall. post 71

In my experience the circled areas always have issues with drywall unless it’s a sold surface. The grout or silicone fails and it doesn’t get caught till it’s full of back mold and the rafters and subfloor ate starting to rot letting it drip down to the floor below.

I’m surprised your cheap ass did double membrane and plywood, that’s expense stuff.
Yeah, that stuff has skyrocketed even since I bought this.

I talked to several contractors who don’t do that, and im going off their recommendations. Also, that’s insurance’s problem in 15-20 years, so hopefully I’ll get my money back.

Dudes liscenced, insured, and came highly recommended by several people. Ill know soon as my couch sits under the shower…

Second, I already bought this stuff, so it’s getting used. :flipoff2:

Third, it’s gonna be a rainfall shower, so less of it goes on the walls, in theory,

Since I’m playing plumber, I’m installing a new water softener.

The water was 29 grains hard.

double membrane is a terrible idea.

if you wanted brick house you should have done a lead lined mud pan and floated the walls.
This isn't a Sofried job or a slumlord flipper special. The "pan" in this case is a cast iron tub I have to actually live in it so it's well done (well except for the amateur AF grout job).

Anywho. I'm using a 3 knob bathtub knob set as the 2 way shower head controls. **** paying $500 for a fancy diverter valve.

Dude, just use a normal spinny shower only valve and tee off it's supplies to run a normal tub valve. Basic valves are cheap AF, or were a couple years ago.
