Power wheels traction.

All my gearhead buddies with kiddos have done this. These little things rip with mods.

Since this was his first and he got it at under 2 I went with a 6v which is only one wheel drive. It was fine while he was learning. It just isnt powerful and didnt get any traction. I tried just using a 12v battery which started smoking some of the components. Mainly the radio, which he just has to have.

So I bought an entire 2 speed 12v system off of Amazon. It has two drive motors which are much bigger 550 motors and came with a remote control system. I also had to buy an additional drive hub and 12v radio module since it didnt come with one. All in all im into it for about $100 including the battery.

It was a pretty easy swap, strip it down. change the modules and wiring. Screw the second drive hub to the other wheel. Slide in the new gear boxes. Even the remote steering was fairly easy. Its similar to the drive gear boxes. I had to make a holder to keep the servo gear box from twisting around and drill a hole through the steering shaft for the dowel to catch the servo.

Its much faster and has alot better traction with two drive wheels and the MTB knobbys screwed on. Id post pics but for some reason I cant and I cant do emojis either. Something wrong with my phone.

This one is getting handed down to Thing 2, and were getting this monster 24v 4wd drive one with 18" rubber tires for Thing 1. It still has a remote with a daddy override to keep him from being too stupid. I dont want to nanny him too much because pain is a good learning tool, but he does some really dumb ****.

get that kid a real go cart
that kid is ready :grinpimp:

We are looking at the rzr 170’s.

As an update, we have smoked (3) 12ah 60v batteries. The kids run them until they don’t go anymore. There is no logic in the cheap Amazon adapter that I used. I’ll follow up with a Dewalt part number that does.

this is a fisher price power wheels, is there a way to add a remote to it? steering is kinda stiff too, any tips?

You can buy the kits on amazon. When the dudes were very little i had bought them a 6 volt buggy. Well that proved to be too slow so I bought a 24 volt kit for it. Had upgraded motors and gear drives, power contrler with remote built in and a steering servo kit that fit over the steering shaft. Drilled a hole in the shaft put in the pin screwed the servo to the chassis and boom more power and remote control. Worked really well and you could cut power when the youngest little demon spawn decided to take off. Now he does it on his quad which doesnt have a remote and is much faster than I can run. Little ****.

Just buy a more expensive powerwheel. 4wd 4 portals higher front gear ratio remote control or driver's control.

so i may have jumped the gun on this one but I thought i read actual power wheels brand is the one to get so I kind of rushed to spend the 100 bucks on this one.

The one you linked, is that a power wheel brand? because seems like theres a million chinese brands out there with ****ty reviews.

Why would you want a remote? Kids are basically warm blooded remotes.

well not being able to reach the pedals for starters

My brother bought my niece this for Christmas, 2 speed, 18v, 4wd and Chinese music on the radio unit. It also has a remote control that unlocks a 3rd speed. The controls are just on off so no feathering. I've told him to find some inner tubes we can stretch to put over the tires so it gets more traction. She finally got used to pushing the throttle but the steering for her sucks fighting the 4wd and no assist. She's now moving on to a tricycle before her third birthday next month. I've started looking for 50cc dirt bikes on Facebook market place.

I drove it up and over that stump without her in it using the remote.

I started adapting some rubber wheel barrow type wheels and tires to my daughters, but didn’t love the look so side lined it with the eventual plan to use lawn mower style tires which are flatter so it doesn’t have the silly looking round profile.

Took some new bearings to press into the wheels to fit the power wheel shafts, and an adapter to get the power drive bolt pattern bolted to the wheels.

dont add traction, its supposed to be like this as it is. my buddy put rubber on his tires, the motors cant handle it. dont do it, Wendle.

We have one of the hurricanes with 16” mower tires on it. It shredded a lot of gear boxes until I added a 24v kit with soft start. The soft start helps immensely.

My brother already tried adhesive grip tape like you would put on a skateboard but the motors just peeled it right off of the hard plastic rims. That's why I was thinking inner tube

No. Go get some MTB tires. 1 29" x 2.5" or wider will do two tires. Cut off the sidewalls screw the tread part using panhead zip screws to attach them to the plastic "tires". The motors will handle it just fine. I did the atvs 3-4 very abused years ago. Look at the beginning of this thread. Im the OP. I have done it to the boys buggy, tractor, and their "kawasaki" atvs. The atvs have old tioga psychos IIs from my ancient mtb racing days and some generic 1/4" square block tread tires up front. Huge difference in the grass and uphills.

I didn't buy it and I can't figure it out. 24v 4x4

Well, update

ordered a sabretooth 2x32 esc, a monster xl 115kg servo

and some xt60 connectors

the servo has a youtube video of literally lifting a girl, so it should be solid for steering. I received it today, and its, well, a very substantial servo.

I really really dig the way the power wheels looks, and not sure how much I trust the chinese remotes etc. Also looking at the electric motors, they all kind of suck, plastic gears break etc.

Plan is to use one of my airtronics radios and receivers since I have like 7 other RCs.

No interest in anything fast. 5mph is just perfect. Maybe hook upna little wagon to it for grocery or beach runs.

I still don't get it, just teach the kid to drive. All 4 of mine could drive with a purpose by 2.5y.
Ok my younget was blasting the powerwheels atv on high speed by his second birthday. Doesnt mean he listened when I said stop. He started on his lt80 before he turned 4 still doesnt mean he always listens. The oldest stops when you tell him to, the younger looks at you like "catch me old man" and pins the throttle. But Im sure your kids are perfect. Did you beat the submission into them?

Besides did you miss the fun giant RC car part? I found a "broken" razor quad at a garage sale for $20, it was then rebuilt with a 48v FAST kit with a receiver, speed contol and a steering servo. It will haul ass or a trailer loaded with beer and ice down from the house from a quarter mile away. I have a feeling this winter it will get the plastic ripped off along with handle bars and a get replaced with a suitable truck body of some sort.

Sounds like a parenting problem to me :flipoff2:

The problem with steering servos is not torque, it's impacts.

Use a servo saver or it will break the output gear first time she runs a front wheel into something.

ironically I'm just about done printing a M12 adapter and inline fuse holder to throw at my sons' 6v quad to hopefully give it a little more oomph. It barely moves when he gets on

just crossing my fingers I don't smoke a battery having no regulator or anything on it. If I smoke the quad, owell, he'll get an upgrade.

Motors are cheap.

Our 6v peg perego case tractor used to fly with a 12v battery. Once we smoked the motor, which lasted a long time I found a 12v motor and gearbox fit right in its place. It’s much tamer, but perfect for our 3 year old.

Also, in my experience the peg perego stuff is much better built. We’ve never broken a gearbox on one. I’ve been through tons of power wheels gearboxes.
