Anyone mess with meshtastic?

I appreciate the replies. Off to do some more digging on this. This might be perfect for a spot without service we go to. Its annoying not being able to communicate with the wife if I am out fishing.

You will need repeaters AFAIK.

The nodes themselves are the repeaters. Your phone talks to your local node through bluetooth, then each node to another with lora. Range depends on line of sight and the antennas, and supposedly starts to crap out around 6 hops. That can be hundreds of miles on a string of mountain tops, or barely anything in rough terrain.

In small groups meshtastic works OK, if you want more than 10 or so nodes and want real/reliable communication over any distance look into meshcore.

It runs on the same devices, easier to configure and app is much more streamlined.

MT is more chatty in the background and will report positions and work with ATAK.

MC is more power efficient, 64 hops and is simply reliable communications. Not the best with positions though. Currently a good portion of I5 from BC to southern oregon is linked semi regularly.

Either one is fun to play with and devices are cheap.

We use MT when playing in the woods and MC between a couple counties to stay in touch.

Is this the same technology that Sena and cardo use on their intercoms ??

Does it need cell coverage that's the deal breaker for me, lots of areas I hike have zero cell coverage, to many mountains.
No but does require other nodes to pass thr msg along. 1 mile ish range.

Another option now that cheap Chinese radios have Bluetooth

Just connects your phone to the radio which allows you to set up a digital network over VHF easily.

Brought one to the cabin. Doesn't seem I can reach any nodes with the little handheld. Heltec v3
How far is the cabin from other civilization? You may have to set up other nodes between your cabin and where you want to reach or where other nodes are.
