I smashed my left transmission on a rock mowing last year. Went ahead and used some Nu-Metal Epoxy from KBS Coatings and it was fine. This spring it started leaking so I tried more epoxy.

Still leaking.

This is a Hustler Raptor XD with the ZT-2800 transmission. I reached out to Hydro-Gear and they said I have to use my exact model number for a replacement. Just so happens my transmission model number is like $500-$600 more than any other ones.

Does anyone know if I find the same drive ratio if other models interchange? Surely Hydro-Gear doesn’t make that many specific models, right?

can you swap your internals into a different unbroken housing?
start looking on ebay for used ones that look externally similar
if it shows up and doesn't have the same displacement ratio (tested by installing it and seeing if it goes the same speed as the other side) then swap housings

ETA: unless they managed to make the housings different for the different pump/motor parts
could see that being a thing

Yeah that’s what I don’t know. Researching mower parts isn’t as in depth as our automotive hobby is, like swapping parts or fabrication. Just seems everyone utilizes the proper model numbers.
Weld the permanent patch on the existing case?
Make it where it is reinforced if possible so further crack spread is a no go.

I can’t weld aluminum, or that would have been my first approach.

If I couldn't weld it, I'd take it to someone who can. Or just weld it anyway :flipoff2:.

Drill and tap the case "pull" the crack shut with a few pieces of flat bar "straps" and re epoxy it?

What hydro-gear part numbers are you getting?

This is the model number on the Hydro-Gear: ZH-MPBB-SBLC-3MTX

I Googled to see if the ZT-2800 was universal. It’s apparently not, but I’m suspicious.

This transmission is like $959 shipped. The others are like $400 on eBay. It’s also a much newer mower so that maybe why.

buy you a tig welder that'll do AC

might even pay for itself in one job depending on what craigslist deal you come across
a dirty epoxy impregnated project will creat more fusteration for a new-to-aluminum welder than what it is worth

but, I would for sure get it welded if I could find a guy

Cases are not available separately but you could buy the cheap one and try to see if it will work and if not use the case with your internals

I have a feeling I’m just going to bite the bullet and just buy the $950 one.

My luck something will be different and it’ll turn into a nightmare. Guess I was just hoping some guru would come on and be like yeah, use these models and they all fit.

I did a side job recently for some spare cash for buggy parts. Guess it turned into mower parts. Stupid mower. Stupid rocks.

From what I've seen usually the input, output shafts and control linkages are different but the internal pump and motor are the same.

if he's trying to solder it, yes
tig welding with the magic of AC?
no problem at all, just hammer down and stir the puddle up with your tungsten for a little extra brightness so you can see better

you ever done this before ?

How new is your mower. I had a bracket break on mine and went to the mower place to get one and he checked my vin and it still had warranty left and he got the part for me and put it on for free under warranty.

I’m out of warranty by like one year. I pretty much crushed the whole bottom of this.

Just need to replace it. Stings, man, these transmissions have filters and should last a long time.

Is it worth a drive to my shop? I could take a whack at welding it. Grind out all the bull****, multi pass it. Have it still leak, throw it in the trash and then buy a new one.
Weld plus JB weld to seal it would probably work. I broke a transmission case on my polaris xplorer 300 when the chain broke and wrapped around the front sprocket. I had a guy weld a patch in then put jb weld over his weld just in case and it never leaked a drop again.

Yeah…it’s worth that. It’s not worth me buying a new gas tank and trying to learn tig on it.

But I’ll grind out as much as I can beforehand. Got like 7 days between mows. It’s super easy to pull off.

I don't know what abrasive to use, but this is coalslag on steel with a hf media blast gun and 75' of ½" air hose.

Does that gun work good?

Seems like it'd be the ***s for quick little stuff where I don't wanna drag out the 5-gal one and put on PPE.

I think that it wastes a lot of material, but it works pretty good. My brother in law gave me this one & I'm not sure if he ever used it or just left it outside
